Mr THORBY - It is the policy of the Commonwealth Government to do certain work by day labour where it can be donn, expeditiously and without interfering with the activities of certain organizations. These works relate chiefly to remodelling, additions, and the like.


Mr Holloway - I wish all the work could be done by day labour.


Mr THORBY - That is not the policy of this Government. I have not been furnished with any information as to a shortage of staff in the Works Department, but, as I stated the other day, I have not yet had an opportunity to acquaint myself fully with all the affairs of the department.
