Mr NAIRN (PERTH, WESTERN AUSTRALIA) - Will the Minister for the Interior inform me on what authority the Government proposes to proceed with the erection of the new patents office? What parliamentary authority has been obtained ?

Mr McEWEN - It would he more pertinent for me to ask the honorable member in what respect the Government would need authority to proceed with this work, provided that funds are made available for it in conformity with the budget proposals for the coming financial year. Probably the honorable member's question was prompted by the belief thata statutory provision exists which obliges the Government to refer such works to the Public Works Committee; but that is not the case. The Government does not intend to proceed with the work until the expenditure is endorsed by Parliament when the Estimates for the coming year are under consideration.
