Mr WHITE - The vice-president of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Melbourne is a gentleman who has his own commercial interests to serve. The Commonwealth Government makes its arrangements regarding trade treaties with the authorized representatives of the various countries concerned. The telegram read by the honorable member for Swan (Mr. Gregory), or one very like it, was read by the honorable member for Forrest (Mr. Prowse) on Thursday last at about midnight. It was replied to by various Ministers, and on Friday I made a full statement indicating what steps had been taken by the Government in regard to the matter, and the difficulties which confronted Australia in making agreements with foreign countries while, at the same time, carrying out its contractual obligations under the Ottawa Agreement. If the honorable member will read in Hansard what I said on that occasion he will find it to be a complete answer to his question, and to the telegram which he has just read.
