Dr EARLE PAGE (Cowper) . - I move -

That sub-clauseI be omitted with a view to insert in lieu thereof the following: - "A general manager shall be appointed by the Governor-General, shall hold office for a period not exceeding five years, and shall be eligible for re-appointment."

At a later stage I also intend to move that, in place of sub-clause 2, a provision be inserted that the general manager shall be entitled to remuneration by way of salary at such rates as are fixed by the Governor-General. It was admitted last night by the Postmaster-General (Mr. Penton) that the greatest responsibility in connexion with the new form of control of broadcasting would fall upon' the shoulders of the general manager, and, in this circumstance, it is essential that we shall take every care that the best mim available is appointed. I should not have been so anxious to move this amendment had the proposal I made last night been agreed to, for that would have allowed of the widest possible choice in the selection of the general manager.
