The CHAIRMAN (Mr Bell (DARWIN, TASMANIA) - It is not competent for any private member to move an amendment which involves an increase in the amount of appropriation.

Mr Fenton - May I point out that, at a later stage, I shall move that an appropriation, be made to meet the purposes of this bill. At that stage, I shall define the expenditure to be incurred, but, as the Chairman has intimated, it is not competent for a private member to move that the stipulated amount be increased.

Mr THOMPSON - With a view to obtaining an expression of opinion on this subject from honorable members, I propose to move that the salary to be paid to the chairman of this committee be reduced by £1.
