Mr BRUCE (FLINDERS, VICTORIA) - The Government's policy aims at providing the maximum of employment, and to that end it is prepared to co-operate with private enterprise. One of the purposes of the conference of Commonwealth and State Premiers to be held on the 12th April is to consider ways and means of co-operation between governments and private enterprise with a view to minimizing unemployment. I cannot give to the honorable member an assurance on the specific subject he has mentioned; but, if examination should disclose that a measure of Commonwealth assistance to or co-operation with any private enterprise in the development of an industry would result in opening up a new avenue of employment, and help to absorb some of the surplus miners, the Government will give to it sympathetic consideration.
