Mr BRUCE (FLINDERS, VICTORIA) - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follow : -

1.   The cost of the Crown Solicitor's branch offices in Sydney and Melbourne for the year ending 30th June, 1931, was as follows: - Sydney, £13,144; Melbourne, £9,293. The above amounts do not include contingencies. The total expenditure on contingencies for that year in respect of the Crown Solicitor's office and its branches, amounted to £1,727.

2.   The estimated cost of a branch office of the Crown Solicitor at Brisbane is £1,750 per annum, exclusive of rent. This estimate is arrived at as follows: - Staff, £1,550; contingencies, £200. Premises might possibly be obtained in the General Post Office, Brisbane, otherwise rent would be an addition to this estimate. Before an office could be established furniture, library, typewriter, &c, would have to be purchased. These are estimated to cost £500.

3.   For the year ending 30th June last, the total cost was £1,393 comprising salaries £1,326 and contingencies £67. (No rent is payable).

4.   Inspector Macklehan and Inquiry Officers Foote and Short.

5.   Since the Financial Emergency Act 193.1, the inspector's salary is £461, and the salary of each inquiry officer is £291.
