Mr HAWKER - For several months past the Department of Markets has been in communication with the authorities in Great Britain and China with a view to securing for Australia contracts for railway sleepers. Mr. Gepp, who has recently returned from the East, will also report to me at an early date the result of his special investigation into this matter. I may mention that during the seven months ending January last, 464,531 railway sleepers valued at £110,680 were exported from the Commonwealth, of which 92,118 sleepers valued at £18,650 were sent toChina. I can assure the honorable member that I will see that everything possible is done to secure further business in this material for Australia.
