Mr FORDE asked the Minister for Works, and Railways,, upon notice -

1.   What is the present position of the negotiations ' regarding the proposed 4-ft. 84-in. gauge railway between South Brisbane and Kyogle, New South Wales?

2.   What proportion of the cost is to be borne by (a) the Commonwealth; (b) Now South Wales: and (a) Queensland ?

Mr STEWART - The answers, to the honorable member's questions are as follow : -

1.   Negotiations have been finalized, anda memorandum of agreement is in course of preparation. 2. (a.) Commonwealth, one-fifth plus the sum of the amounts which the States of Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia, would have contributed had they been contributors.

(b)   and (c) New South Wales and Queensland respectively will contribute to the cost in the proportion that the population of each of the two States bears to the total population of the five mainland States.
