Mr MATHEWS (MELBOURNE PORTS, VICTORIA) - In regard to the proposal to dismiss or retire a number of men who have been engaged in stores and repair work at the Naval Depot, Melbourne, I desire to ask the Minister for the Navy whether, before taking that action, he will confer with the Minister in charge of shipbuilding, and ascertain whether the men could not be found work in connexion with the shipbuilding operations of the Government. It is quite possible that the particular work carried out at the Naval Depot by these men might be taken over by the shipbuilding branch, and the men thus given a chance of continuing in employment.
