Sir JOSEPH COOK (PARRAMATTA, NEW SOUTH WALES) (Treasurer) - As the honorable member puts these cases they are, of course, grossly illegal. I know nothing about money lenders offering to cash bonds at 50 per cent. discount. I do know that some insurance societies are offering to cash the bonds on condition that the soldiers cashing them insure their lives, as they may voluntarily undertake to do, for three or four years, the cost amounting to about 20 per cent. of the total sum. However, if the honorable member can cite any cases I shall have them inquired into.
