Dr MALONEY (MELBOURNE, VICTORIA) asked the Minister for Works and Railways, upon notice -

1.   What is the total sum to date expended by or for Mr. Balsillie directly or indirectly upon the rain experiments?

2.   Has Mr. Balsillie any power to purchase goods or appliances at the expense of the Government for such experiments?

Mr.GROOM. - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follow: -

1.   £5,273. The honorable member's attention is invited to replies to questions of 30th April, 1920, and 11th May, 1920, concerning these experiments.

2.   The Department pays all wages and accounts for material. Mr. Balsillie, in the first instance, indicated what the expenditure wouldbe, and, subject to the limit of the Minister's authorization, it was arranged that Mr. Balsillie should order the technical stores and forward the accounts to the Department for examination and payment. Larger items of expenditure were separately submitted for approval before orders were placed.
