View in ParlViewView other Segments

A clear and shocking picture of the scale of child sexual abuse within the Catholic Church in Australia has been revealed at the Royal Commission today.

The inquiry has been told more than 1,200 Catholic priests and religious brothers and sisters were accused of abuse in Australia between 1950 and 2010.

Overall, 7 per cent of the church's priests were recorded as an alleged abuser in those decades.

One of the church's senior leaders says the numbers are tragic and indefensible.
