Queensland Labor has become the first major party in Australia to support an affirmative action target for LGBTI candidates.

The state Labor Party's weekend conference endorsed a push for 5 per cent LGBTI representation.

Queensland Labor has lagged behind other states in pre-selecting LGBTI candidates.

Now, the party will have to deal with the complexities of quotas for women, as well as targets for Indigenous and gay representation.
