You broke this story in the papers going

going to work? How it would work is arrived
that any asylum seeker who has by
arrived by boat or sought to arrive by boat since July 2013 would never reenter

mean is even if they are found to if

if they wanted to return to and
Australia in five, 10 or 20 year, visa,

'In Conversation with Alex Malley'

Today,
journalist Peter Overton,

has been in the news business
for 25 years.

Every day I love coming to work.

I love walking through
the front gate.

And why?

Because I love people's stories.

There's been controversy.

You're stepping over the line now.
Just, put your manners back in.

Well, I actually
knew Tom beforehand.

I'd met a few times when he
was married to Nicole Kidman,

who I know very well having been
her neighbour for many, many years.

And some tough personal
times in the spotlight.

It was a really hard time for...
for her and for me and...

really challenging.

Peter Overton, welcome to
the other side of the news desk.

Thank you, Alex.

It's interesting being on
the other side of the news desk.

I enjoy interviewing people,

done thousands of them,
don't know what to expect.

I'll be as gentle as I can.
Please.

Now, I want to go back to

a very young Peter Overton,

who harangued his mother

to take him into the audience

of 'The Mike Walsh Show'.

It sounds like
a child with disturbing issues.

Well, that would be a good

But I think then, all that time ago,

I was interested in people,
and people's stories,

and television and the magic of
television that came into our house.

And so Mum, to her great credit,
used to write the phone number down

when they'd put it up
at the end of the show,

and she and I would come in
to the studio next door,

believe it or not,

and I'd sit there
and soak it all up and think,

"One day I'm going to work here."

You are the eldest of four
children.

Dad, a doctor, Mum, a nurse.

Was there any sense in any stage

of your life as a young boy,

that you might move into medicine
or any of that area?

Not one sense, no way.

I think the closest I got to medicine

was Dad conducting
the first aid course

at First Longueville Scouts.

But, no, one of my sisters
is a very successful doctor,

and we're very proud of her.

I think, for me,
I just can't stand blood.

And I can't stand people suffering,
so it's not a good fit.

But I used to visit
the children's hospital, with Dad,

on Saturday morning rounds
every weekend.

I have very clear memories of Dad
as a beautiful doctor,

with an incredible bedside manner,
and the joy he had for his job.

And I think it's the joy
that he had that's transferred to me,

and the joy I have for my career.

Yeah, which is a wonderful legacy
from your dad to give you.

Now, moving on to 2UE,
you were 17, 18.

You're doing work experience.

Tell me about the rounds
that you did in those earlier years.

I used to collate the sports results
on a Saturday and a Sunday.

And it was a 12-hour shift.
It was unpaid.

And then I'd go and sit in the studio

after each Saturday's shift
and Sunday shift.

And I would record myself
presenting the news

or presenting the sports update.

And I used to leave them for
a guy called John Brennan,

who is now about 85,

and I still have a cup of tea
with Brenno.

Still a legend.
He is a legend - Mr Radio.

And I used to leave them for him
and hope that he'd listen...

and he did listen.

At about, I think, 17 or 18, he said,
"You're on."

I'll never forget that first time.

A guy Chris Kearns

was hosting the afternoon shift.
And you could smoke in those days.

So, he had about three
cigarettes burning in the ash tray.

He had the form guide. But he had
the most beautiful voice, Kearnsy.

And he said, "Time now for
a sports update with Peter Overton."

And I went, "Hi, everyone, it's...
Well, in rugby league, this..."

I was so nervous,
I could not get the words out.

And I looked up, and
I couldn't see him through the smoke.

And he was on the form guide.

And I knew I had to keep swimming.

"Manly and Easts,
meanwhile, are in a tug-of-war.

And the NRL has been spared
another public relations disaster."

This is your 25th year
at Channel Nine.
