More Kenyan army troops are being sent to the yarnd an upNairobi shopping mall as operations to end a stand you have with Islamist rebels continues. As we report, from Nairobi, the Somali militants are still holding an unknown number of hostages inside the centre. The death toll stands at 39 and more than 150 people have been injured. Militants from the al-Qa'ida linked al-Shabaab group have claimed responsibility. They entered the shopping centre during the launch time rush firing indiscriminately. Witness have described the panic as everyone tried to flee and then how they hid in store rooms and shops. It's not known how many hostages are still inside, but Kenyan police insist the situation is under control. It's understood the gunmen are confined to one part of the shopping centre. Al-Shabaab says it has warned Westgate shopping centre was a targets.Dennian journalist Larry Madowo worked in Nairobi, he says the casualty list is likely to grow substantially. The number is very likely to climb because these are only the official numbers and I should say perhaps very Conservative numbers are Government agencies, first responders and ambulances that were on the scene but because the entire building they have not been able to come in and take stock of any bodies in there or all the hospitals have not been able to put together a deft so by this morning well have a lot more people confirmed dead or if the security services manage to take control of mall, definitely a few Mr Bodies will be found in there. There have have been to be hundreds, possibly thousands inside thisle Ma, one of the biggest in Nairobi. There could be people in their hundreds still holding some of the establishment waiting for the opportunity or rescue before they can come out. Two years ago, almost actly two years ago today force move into Somali to try to quell the al-Shabaab that has been wreaking hovic in parts of Kenya. They moved in to try afterbring them militant group to a complete halt but that did not - was not quite successful and they have been promising attacks on Kenyan soil. This is perhaps the biggest one they've had yet. More minor Greg Combetade incidents but this is the biggest operation yet and the al-Shabaab have been gloating about this, at some point twit has suspended the official that al-Shabaab account but still definitely trying to make it clear that was their operation and perhaps saying there might be more coming and Kenyans should be panicking.Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta says his Government will support the survivors and families of the victims. The entire nation, I stand with the families of those who have lost their live s and extend every Kenyan's deputy eest condolences. Disgraced Chinese leader Bo Xilai has been given a life sentence after being found guilty of bribery, emwaslement and abuse of power. The verdict was handed down amid high security. Mr Bo was removed from office last year amid a scandal which saw his wife convicted for the murder of Neil Heywood. The former party chief of Chongqing denied all the charges against him in August. He's appeal against the sentence. August. He's now expected to appeal against the sentence. I
spoke to appeal against the sentence. spoke to the ABC's spoke to the ABC's China correspondent in spoke to the correspondent in Beijing.Well, Bo Xilai has been found guilty of all charges so it's bribery, embezzlement and abuse embezzlement and abuse of State power and he's been given a life sentence. On top of this life sentence, all his assets, person, are going to be confiscated including a controversial villa in France that was given to the family by a corrupt businessman.Where do all these corrupt charges is stem from?It all comes back to a political fight really. It all sort of came to a head when the Chongqing police chief fled to the United States embassy, con-Sewellate in Chongqing hoping for political asylum. He was to blow the lid on all this corruption going on in Chongqing under Bo Xilai's leadership. The interesting thing though is that I think most Chinese people think he may have been corrupt, he may have received bribes, but he's no different to so many Chinese political figures and that the real reason behind why he's been sent the party is a political one, that he threatened other Chinese powerful figures within the Communist Party and as the head of the Communist Party and as head of his own soft neomaoist faction he was threatening to faction he take over the whole faction at one stage and they wanted to be rid of him and they've used this to bring him down, pretty much.Today's results, was that essentially a pregone conclusion?I think we all expected he was going to be sent to jail, from the outset if you go to court in China, pretty much you're going to lose, the surprising thing was the strength of his defence though. In an Australian court, the charges against him would have been thrown out. He was able to punch very large holes in the prosecution case against him. But yeah, I mean, China you go to court, the party runs the courts, they'll make the result that they want happen and so we expected him to lose.Syria has handed over details of its chemical weapons arsenal just hours ahead of a deadline set by a disarmament deal. colleagues and party members select him as leader. We also need to acknowledge I think where we got it wrong and areas like I think the sole parent payments is an area where we made a mistake, we essentially meant that some of the most vulnerable people ended up with lisz income but perhaps just as importantly to them, to those that I've spoken to, there was a lack of respect I think for the role that they play as sing simple parents. The mayor of Morland says the community is thinking of Melbourne woman Jillian Meagher and her family on the anniversary of her death.
