This program is not captioned. This program is captioned live. And down in lane 6 is Magnussen trying to come back. They are bunched up and it is Magnussen that gets the gold! "The Missile" shows the world what he's made of in a stunning victory at the World Championships. Taking them on - James Hird hires a QC as ASADA prepares to release its findings. Life plus 1,000 years for the man who held three women captive for a decade. Must-win test - Pup scores a tonne after another howler from the umpires - and Cricket Australia is demanding answers. That's a shocker, an absolute shocking decision. I've got chills and they are multiplying. The stars of 'Grease' are performing live this morning. SONG:# And my heart is set on you # You better shape up # You better understand # To my heart I must be true # You're in one that I want # You are the one I want # Oh, oh, oh honey # The one that I want # Oh, oh, oh...#That show has absolutely everything and it is a Friday. Good morning.Good morning, Ben Fordham, if that song doesn't get you cranking nothing well. How good is Dicky organising John Travolta...Well, not actually John and Olivia singing but there is another production. All things 'Grease'.Erin Molan is here for sport.Thank you for having me.And Deb you are good.I am just busy singing along. Actually, she looks a little like Sandy.I wanted to be Olivia. I wanted to change my name and be Olivia. I just loved her!Today could be your chance.Love her!! Great to have your company this morning, Friday 2 August. Let's have a quick look at the weather.

Great tunes right through to the morning we pro mess. Right now we have the news with eb -- promise. Right now we have the news with Deb. That is right, we do. He's known as "The Missile" and overnight James Magnussen showed us why - taking out the men's 100m freestyle final at the World Swimming Championships. To take us through the emotional victory is Amelia Ballinger, who joins us from Barcelona. Amelia, a great performance, especially after the disappointment of the London Olympics. This is the race that everybody has been waiting for. After the dramas of last year there were serious questions over whether James Magnussen was physically and mentally capable of performing and performing well here tonight we know he took things easy in his semis yesterday and he looked relaxed and rested when he arrived here and we were hoping for the best. Boy, did he do his job well! Take a look at the last sort of 50m of his race and just how close it was.Magnussen looks like he is going to go by.Trying to hang on up there in lane 2 and down in lane 6 is Magnussen trying to come back. Wow, they are bunched up and it is Magnussen who got the gold. (CHEERING AND APPLAUSE) There were five swimmers who came crashing into the wall all backed up.And Deb, James said after the race the overwhelming emotion for him was understandably relief. He said that when he touched that wall and turned around and saw number one next to his name, he was so drained from the effort of performing that he didn't have time to be excited. He was just relieved - relieved for himself. He said it was a big reward for his support network, his family and friend and his coach who has stood by him and helped him through a different year for them all. Good on, we are pleased for him indeed. And the women's relay team picked up a medal. These girls continue to perform, every single day these girls have been in the pool doing a fantastic job. They got a silver medal tonight in their relay doing a very, very good job. They still have a couple of races to go over the next couple of days. Another person in that 100m freestyle was young Cameron McEvoy. He raced against James Magnussen. No-one was expecting very much of him but he came in fourth. Certainly one to watch. Magnussen thinks he will be giving him a run for his money come Rio.Great to see the Aussies doing well in the pool again. Thank you. The man who abducted three women and held them captive for a decade in Ohio, has been sentenced to life without parole - plus another thousand years. Ariel Castro says he is a sick person, struggling with a sexual addiction, but insists he's not a monster. For more we're joined by US correspondent Denham Hitchcock. Denham, just one of Castro's victims was in court today. How did she cope?Yeah, that is right, Michelle Knight was the person who stood up in court to face her captor, one of three women as you said. She was held for 11 year, raped, beaten, tortured, miscarried five times. By all accounts she took the worst of the beatings from Ariel Castro. Today she took the stand and as she said, "I will live on and you will die a little every day." Take a listen. You took 11 years of my life away and I have got it back. I spent 11 years in hell. Now your hell is just beginning.Very powerful to hear from her. Castro also took to the stand. What did he have to say? Yeah, he did and this was pretty hard to hear. It was rambling and at times a little incoherent and he interrupted the judge. It was repulsive, basically evidenceville. He tried to he is not a violent person, he didn't do this on purpose, he lived in a harmonious house, that the women almost wanted to be there, that he had an addiction, that it wants his fault, that they even asked him for sex. At one point he blamed the FBI and said they could have ended it if only they had spoken to him. It looked like he also shed a few tears but it wasn't for the victims only for himself.I am not a monster, I am a normal person, I am just sick. I have an addiction, just like an alcoholic has an addiction. Alcoholics cannot control their addiction. That is why I couldn't control my addiction, your honour. The judge made pretty short work for him saying there is no place in this city n this country or this world for him. He gave him life without parole plus 1,000 years on top of that. He shuffled off outside of the courtroom. He will never see the light of day, never see freedom and hopefully we will never hear from him again. We will leave it there. Thank you. Mystery surrounds the death of a woman south-east of Melbourne. Family members discovered her body inside a home in Pakenham yesterday afternoon, and quickly contacted police. There is injuries on the body which we consider to be suspicious and we will be requesting a post moretem to be conducted and that will determine the cause of death. From here we are talking to relatives who are obviously distraught and the neighbours and then we will try to back track some movements of the deceased person and any others who may be involved. The woman has not been identified and detectives say it's too early to determine when she died. Qantas says it believes 26 passengers that fell violently ill on a flight from Santiago to Sydney yesterday, contracted the illness before boarding the aircraft. The group - who were returning from World Youth Day celebrations in Brazil - suffered a severe stomach bug. They had to ask for a doctor, ask one of the passengers if they were a doctor, so she went around checking everyone. They were all together that group, so they might have caught something before they got on to plane, perhaps. The passengers were quarantined on arrival, with 16 taken to hospital. Besieged Essendon coach James Hird has reportedly hired prominent human rights barrister Julian Burnside QC to take on ASADA, which is due to hand down its findings into the doping scandal any day now. Meantime, speculation is growing that sports scientist Stephen Dank could be called up soon to speak with anti-doping officials, six month's into their investigation. It comes as questioning resumed with 30 players and officials from the NRL, hours after new laws were passed allowing ASADA to issue fines for anyone who refuses to comply with interview requests. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will hand down his mini-budget and anyone with a bank account is set to be targeted. Mr Rudd will announce plans to implement a 0.05% levy on savings up to $250,000. The new tax will kick in on January 1, 2016, with the money set aside to protect deposits if financial institutions fail. The levy is expected to accrue $733 million in just 18 months. The Government has already confirmed it plans to hit smokers with a 12.5% a year tax. Controversy has overshadowed a brilliant day for Australia in the third Ashes test. Live now to Nine News reporter Roz Kelly for the latest. A fight back from the Aussies which is great but controversial regarding the umpires, Roz?Deb, this entire Ashes series has been marred by controversial surrounding the umpires and the decision review system and today has been considered one of the worst howlers since the video review third umpire was introduced to the game. Usman Khawaja, he was given out for one caught behind but he didn't believe that so he called for a review. It showed basically daylight between bat and ball. There was no hot spot, no nikko, no sound on the bat. But the third umpire didn't agree and gave him out. So he up held the original umpire's decision. Khawaja was furious. Cricket Australia have had enough of these howlers and have asked for a please explain from the contributing body today.

-- contributing body today.

From what we saw in the replays I think even the England guys had given up hope of it being out. So, yeah, it was disappointing and, you know, another question mark, I guess. It is people's careers on the line as well, so you want these decisions to be right. Now, I have sought an explanation from umpires, from the ICC officials, the powers that be, even their optomotrist and no-one is prepared to comment at this stage. They say they don't speak during a test. This has outraged the cricket community and the wider community - even Prime Minister Kevin Rudd tweeted about it earlier today saying this is one of the worst decisions I have ever seen and the grace of the game, in particular Shane -- greats of the game, in particular Shane Warne are disgusted. That is a shocker. That is a shocking decision. There it is the bat hitting the pad, you can see the bat hitting the pad and the ball goes past no noise. There was clear evidence. That is a ridiculous decision. Now this really overshadowed what was a dominant day for Australia. Michael Clarke won the toss and he is 124 not ot at stumps. Steven Smith a great supporting act. Australia 3/303 at stumps. They really ground England gown today. I love your views on that as well. We will have a full match report in sport, thank you. NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell has appointed Andrew Constance as the state's new finance minister, after Greg Pearce was sacked yesterday.

Greg Pearce was sacked yesterday.
Mr Pearce breached the Ministerial Code of Conduct, relating to the appointment of lawyer Richard Fisher to the board of Sydney Water in 2011. It also follows months of allegations of wrongdoing and questionable conduct, including being drunk in parliament and misusing taxpayer funds. A home in Sydney's west has been sprayed with bullets overnight. Neighbours reported hearing several gun shots in Eagle Vale, just after midnight. No-one was injured in the incident, but police found a number of bullet holes in the exterior of the property. Detectives believe the shooting was a targeted attack. Forensic officers will remain at the scene throughout the morning. The man who leaked a series of US intelligence secrets has been given permission to stay in Russia for a year after spending more than a month holed up in a Moscow airport. Former CIA contractor Edward Snowden slipped quietly into Russia saying the law is winning. TRANSLATION: Concerning his place of residence, he will choose it himself. He can live in a hotel or an apartment. As he is one of the most wanted people on earth, he will be making sure that his place of residence is absolutely safe. The Kremlin's decision to give Snowden asylum has prompted the US to review plans for next month's meeting between US President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladamir Putin. Taking a look at the financial markets now:

2012 was the year of Gangnam Style. This year's hottest YouTube sensation is a Thai drummer - who has style and rhythm - but no actual drum kit. The artist, known as Note, drew a chalk drum kit on his wall in Bangkok and played along to his favourite songs. The video has already got more than 200,000 views on YouTube. The 29- year-old music teacher says his next project involves becoming a one-man band by drawing chalk guitars, saxophones and other instruments. My husbands is a drummer and it would make lugging in and out of the gig how much easier, wouldn't it?Not to mention the practice in the garage. You can hear the lawyers for the Buzz calling saying there is a -I know, a bit of breach of contract there. I have drawn a line of chalk in the sand.Because your husband is a drummer you get away with it. You get away with it any way - what am I going to do! Let's have a look at the fly around today.

I wonder what is on the front page of the NT News today. Right now we don't have Tim Gilbert but we have Erin Molan with all of the sport. There is a whole heap going on. Stay with us after the break we will take another look at James Magnussen stunning swim. It was incredible. Plus, how the Aussies got themselves on This program is not captioned.

Clarke was a champion.
Welcome back, great to have your company. So much sport going on so let's go straight to Erin.Go!! Thank you, as we heard earlier, an emotional James Magnussen is back on top of the world after successfully defending his 100m freestyle crown at the world titles in Barcelona. He put the disappointment of the Olympics behind him, storming home for Australia's second gold

behind him, storming home for
Australia's second gold medal of the meet.Down at lane 6 is Magnussen trying to come back. It is Magnussen who gets the gold. It was also a strong performance from Cameron McEvoy - he finished fourth. While our girls 4x200 freestyle team was also on song, picking up silver behind the Americans. A brilliant innings from Captain Michael Clarke has put Australia into a strong position after the opening day of the third Ashes test at Old Trafford. The Aussies have 303 on the board, but the day wasn't without controversy as the DRS issues that plagued the Lord's test resurfaced again. Here is Roz Kelly. Qudgequdgequdgequdge's face said it all, given out in the latest DRS debacle. (CHEERING AND APPLAUSE) The top order batsman convinced the umpire was wrong and both the replays and the hot spot supported his case - only the third umpire didn't see it that way.I can't believe. That I felt for him. But, you know, it has been happening so we just have to get on with it.The decision soured an otherwise great first day at the crease for Australia, as Chris Rogers found his groove to notch 84 and captain Michael Clarke gave it to England's bowlers.Using his feet hitting down the ground straighter this time. Four more.Steven Smith survived a few nervous moments in a great supporting role.An edge - the umpire said not out and Smith is standing there.Any bitterness the Aussies had earlier in the day slight eased by the skipper.Steve Smith is quickly off to make sure a single was had. A century for Michael Clarke. Captain's innings. Well appreciated by Australia. He is such a key person in our batting side that if he scores runs it makes it easier on everyone else around him. He and Smith finished the opening day with a partnership of 171 - Australia in a strong position with 300 on the board at stumps. AFL - North Melbourne and Geelong get Round 19 started at Etihad Stadium tonight, with the Cats needing a win to keep pace with Hawthorn at the top of the table. Essendon and Collingwood face off in a big clash tomorrow. And the Pies know they need to improve on their performance against GWS last weekend. We are going OK, we are in the top, four or five in a lot of areas but certainly we could do it a lot better and accuracy as well. The Dons have received a big boost for the match - skipper Jobe Watson will play after being cleared of a broken collarbone. Ben Hannant and Jack Reed are both expected to return for the Broncos, when they face off against the Knights tonight. Reed's comeback is two weeks ahead of schedule, while at the Dragons, Matt Cooper is hoping a season-ending pec injury won't also bring an end to his career.I have a bit of thinking to do over the next few days. I have a meeting with a club next week and hopefully have my future decided come next week. The Dragons play the Bulldogs on Monday night. Brumbies Coach Jake White says he never expected to take his side to a Super Rugby final, after taking over as head coach two years ago. He insists this year's success is down to the tight-knit nature of the team. They talk a lot about being a little town and spending time together but I think the reality that is exactly what it is like in Canberra now. The Brumbies take on the Chiefs in the decider in Hamilton tomorrow evening. Now, the Chiefs are favourite for this one but according to the Kiwi press they are not worries about the Brumbies about their fast backs or their forwards, they are worried about their common sense. I don't know what that says about the Kiwis. That something we all have to monitor frequently. Georgie not so much... Speaking of common sense? After the break, hello, hello?I am full of something, I don't know if it is common sense. Hay, Simon Cowell, love triangle drama. That is right, he might soon be a daddy but is he to blame for this vicious divorce? All the scoop and scandal coming up.

Let's get a hit of gossip.Just a quick one. Now, Simon Cowell yesterday we learnt he was just about to become a daddy. Today a further development?Yes, daddy isn't the only thing she being called this week. He is also being called adulterer - that is right! Court papers filed just two weeks ago by Andrew Silverman, he put Simon's name down on the dotted line saying yes, my wife committed adultery with Simon Cowell. He has been dragged into this divorce. Apparently they have been seeing each other for at least 2.540s because that is -- 2.5 months because that is how long she is pregnant. The three were seen on vacation but it is all a different story now and it is all going to be played out in court. The game the whole family can play. Thank you for that. We will check in with you a little later.OK.Wow.So don't go on vacation together. No, one of the reasons.Good morning, everyone, it is time for the news. A very good morning to you. James Magnussen has put the disappointment of the London Olympics aside, to show us exactly why he's known as "The Missile" - claiming victory in the 100m freestyle final at the World swimming championships. For more, we're joined by Amelia Ballinger from Barcelona. It was a nail- biting race, take us through it?It really was. These races are just heart-stopping. We were all watching thising oh, my goodness what is going to happen at the end. James took his semifinal easy yesterday ready for this, so we knew when he came out tody he looked rested and relaxed, but at the first turn he wasn't in the top three, so that last 50m was really, really nail-biting. Take a look at what happened towards the ends. Top top screen. Jag jag looks like he is going to go by. He is trying to hang on up there in lane 2 and down in lane 6 is Magnussen trying to come back. It is Magnussen who gets the gold. There were five swimmers who came crashing into the wall all backed up.Just a fantastic result. What did Jamess have to say after the victory?I think when you saw him touch that wall and turn around you saw a big sigh of relief from him. There was a collective sigh of relief from the stands, his coach and the Aussie team and the rest of Australia when they wake up and see that, but that is what he said was his overwhelming remotion, just pure relief. He has trained very hard for this. There has been a lot of turmoil since the loss at the Olympics and he has had a lot to overcome. That win was as much for his support network as it was for his hard work, Deb.It was a really emotional day and race. I have put a lot behind me in the past six to 12 months and this is probably one of my proudest moments just because of what I have overcome.Deb, he wasn't the only medal winner. Our 4 by 200 freestyle women's team picked up a silver medal with a fantastic performance from them. They have done very well all around. Thank you. The man who held three women captive for a decade has been sentenced to life without parole, for the forced miscarriage of his victims' pregnancies. Ariel Castro also received another thousand years for kidnap, rape and assault, told the court he's not a monster - just sick. He likened himself to an alcoholic, who couldn't control their addiction.I every time I came home I would be so glad for the situation .# Only one of his victims testified at the hearing. Michelle Knight looked Castro in the eyes, telling him she spent 11 years in hell, but warned his hell is just beginning. Essendon coach James Hird has stepped up his defence after he was further embroiled in the doping scandal. Let's cross to Today reporter Christine Ahern in Melbourne. Hird has called in some very high-profile legal help?Yes, that is right, the divide between the AFL and the Essendon coach just got that much deeper with James Hird engaging the services of top human rights lawyer Julian Burnside QC. It comes as ASADA wraps up its six-month investigation here at Windy Hill and prepares to hand it down. Mr Burnside will not only lead Hird's response to that report, but also possibly an injunction against that report being made public. The AFL has always been adamant that no matter what the findings, no matter what the contents of that report is, that it will be made public. So the Essendon coach, James Hird and the AFL look set to be pitted against one another.Chris, fresh claims as well against controversial sports scientist Steven Dank, what's happened? That is right. This is coming from 'Age' newspaper this morning that is saying that the sacked sports scientist manipulated James Hird by falsely claiming that Collingwood was using human growth hormone in order to get the controversial pet tide program over the line. Now, this is according to biochemist Shane Charter who is a convicted drug trafficer. He says that Dank tried to get him to verify that he had supplied supplements to Collingwood. However, Charter has told investigators that has he has never sold or supplied Collingwood with any supplements. It certainly has been a big week here at Windy Hill and somehow the players and the coach have to try to return their focus to football. There is a big match on Sunday against Collingwood at the G, however Essendon did finally get some good news with captain Jobe Watson back after a month on the sidelines. There is a game as well. Good to point out. Thank you. Surf Life Saving Queensland is to launch an investigation, after a 17-year- old drowned during a training exercise on the Gold Coast late yesterday afternoon. Jerry Dennis disappeared after falling off his board and into a canal at Mermaid Waters - prompting a large search. Saw them training and then I saw everybody just running, so I ran inside and got some snorkels and masks and flippers. His body was dragged from the water almost an hour later. Jerry's death is another blow to surf life saving which has already lost teenage competitors at the Australian championships since 1996. A Sydney woman has been stabbed in the chest during an attack in the city's west overnight. Police were called to an address at Westmead at around 9:30 to find the 30-year-old lying on the ground bleeding. The woman was rushed to hospital where she underwent surgery she is now in a serious but stable condition. Police say they want to speak to a man who was seen wearing dark clothing near the scene of the incident. Looking at the markets now:

Looking at the markets now:
A lot going on in sport, over to you, rein.Good morning, Deb. Michael Clarke has led Australia on a strong opening day at the third Ashes test against England. He notched his 24th test century, finishing the day unbeaten to 125. He combined with Steve Smith for a partnership of 171. But the first session was a controversial one with Usman Khawaja given out caught behind, despite replays suggesting otherwise.Cricket Australia has sought an explanation from the ICC on the dismissal of Usman Khawaja. In our view the on field decision and referred decision using DRS were both incorrect. Australia has enjoyed another bumper night at the world swimming championships with James Magnussen defending his 100m freestyle crown. We also picked up another silver medal, with the women's 4x200 freestyle team finishing second behind the Americans. A massive blow for the Knights ahead of tonight's clash the Broncos - State of Origin star James McManus is out, after missing training with a back injury yesterday. And North Melbourne has named Ben Jacobs and Luke Delaney in it's side to take on Geelong at Etihad Stadium tonight. The pair replace the injured Andrew Swallow and Nathan Grima. Big sport s wrap coming up soon.Beautiful. Right now Stevie is in Melbourne this morning. Hey, Stevie.Good morning to you we are in the city this morning. Behind me one of the most iconic buildings of Melbourne - the centre piece of the CBD - it is of course Flinders Street station. Times have changed about it is set for a big redesign. People in Melbourne and right around Australia will be very interested in this so we will show you all of the designs today. First we are going to the maps.

On the rainfall map we have a front and that is bringing showers and storms to areas of Victoria and Tasmania. Showers in the south-west slopes of NSW. For all of you skiers, some good news we will be seeing snow to 500m in Tasmania and 900m in Victoria and 1200m in NSW. Fine and dry elsewhere. Well, the world has changed and Flinders Street station has to change to keep up so back in 2011 the Victoria government announced an open competition for a redesign. There are six finalists. We are going to show you all of them today and also let you know how you can have your say and vote on the big redevelopment of Flinders Street station. We are live in Melbourne. Good morning to you all.Good morning, Stevie, that is a fabulous part of Melbourne, absolutely love it. Welcome back. All bets are on this Sunday as the day Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will finally announce a Federal election. The Government appears to be clearing the decks for the ballot with its economic statement expected today. That must be why we saw Malcolm Turnbull loosening up his shoulders a little bit.Getting ready. On top of the new smoking taxes, the Government will be beefing up the coffers with a new levy on banks and credit union deposits up to $250,000. Joining us now to discuss this Federal Health Minister Tanya Plibersek and Shadow Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Good morning to you both. Tanya, let's start with the tobacco tax, it is going to add $5.3 billion, making smokers pay more. They are an easy target? We know that smoking kills 15,000 Australians every year. We know the single most effective thing to do to reduce the smoking rates is put up the price. When we put the price up we saw a 11% drop and we know the most prince sensitive people are young kids, teenageers. If we can prevent them taking up smoking and reduce the amount that existing smokers are smoking that is a great health benefit. It is adding about $5 to the packet. Will the Coalition do this?We will respond to the whole package when it is announced but the reality is that while it will have the health benefits that Tanya mentioned, there is no doubt you put the price up on cigarettes and fewer people smoke, but the reason the government is doing it is not because it is concerned about people's health, it is doing it because it needs the money because it has been spending and borrowing too much. This is all about filling the budget black hole that has been created by Labor's own extravagance. AA lot of your colleges have said they are not in favour. Joe Hockey has been talking about this and I think it is because we can't get a clear message from your colleagues. I know you support it, you said in 2009 we should put up tobacco health excise for health reasons.I am not saying that we are going to support the or not support this particular increase, but I am not going to sit here and be disingenuous. The fact is if you put up the price on cigarette, fewer people will smoke. That happens with most things. On the subject of making up that money which clearly needs to be den at the moment, the bank levy, it is small at 0.05% so that is $5 a year on a $10,000 account but the perception is there that this is still a case of government putting their hands into our pockets and taking our money.Well, I think there will be more details about this over the next few days, but the IMF and other banking institutions have said it is important that we have a strong banking system and this was a gap in our banking system. It is also worth remembering that since we came to government the average person who has a $30,000 mortgage is paying $5,500 less in interest, they had ten interest rate rises under the Howard government and interest has dropped $ 5000, if you are talking about a small impost like that to secure our banking system it is a good investment. Will you adopt it as well?We will respond to the whole package but it just a tax. It is modelled presumably on the sip by not banking tax -You are not ruling out doing the whole thing? We will respond holisticly when the - Holistically?Yes, the whole package.Very touchy, feely. We will respond to the whole en chalada. Can I ask this, what is interesting is this new tax on bank deposits, which is only going to result in depositers getting lower interest receipts so that will be tough on anyone who is a saver, anyone who is a retire', etc, but it has been talked about as though it is somehow or other to fund the deposit guarantee, but if it is going to fund that it should be going into a separate escrow fund and not be part of the government's revenues that it can use for all of its others expenditures. It seems to me to be just another tax.We do need to move to the election date because there are plenty of journalists sitting around in Canberra hanging off your word wondering when it is going to happen, let alone the rest of us who are trying to plan our lives. Tan Y and I know. We were chatting to Kevin earlier and he swore us both to secrecy, didn't he?Did he really. He said, "Tan ya, Malcolm I know you are going on the show but you cannot tell Ben and Georgie when the election..."What did he say, whenever, what ever?Fair suck of the savaloy or something. He will go on Sunday, won't he? I don't know. Are you ready to goI am ready to go.We are so over it. The best thing that Kevin Rudd can do is call the election. We have to get on with it and let the people decide.I'm not ready for that reason, I am really because I love campaigning and I think we are a really good story to sell. You have one of the safest seats in Australia, no wonder you love campaigning. Thank you so much for your time. Tanya Plibersek and Malcolm Turnbull in the house. Just watch this, there is a bear bike rider from Brisbane who has just hit the big time. Put to it the side until I get there, put it in the air, you know what I am talking about? Real slick like. Dogg!! That was a message from Snoop Dogg. I don't know what he said - Subtitles. It was cool the way he said it, though, right?Wacol. And he is now known as Snoop Lion. Where did the dog go. The dog is still there but there is also a Line. We will be answering that question a little later.News time now, Deb. Good morning to you. Swimmer James Magnussen says his back to back world title win in the men's 100m freestyle overnight in Barcelona is one of his proudest moments. "The Missile" lived up to his name, clocking 47.71 seconds in the nail-biting race, just ahead of the Americans. The victory comes after a tough year, following the disappointment of the London Olympics.I have put a lot behind me in the past six to 12 months and this is probably one of my proudest moments just because of what I have overcome. And he wasn't the only one to pick up a medal - the Australian women's 4 by 200m freestyle relay team won silver. The Ohio kidnapper has spoken at his sentencing hearing - blaming his dead wife, the FBI and even the victims for his crimes. Castro says he never set out to keep three women captive for a decade - blaming a sex addiction.I am sick. I mean, I have sexual problems have been so bad... The judge appeared unmoved, sentencing Castro to life without parole plus another thousand years. Another day, another twist in the Essendon doping crisis. Fairfax is reporting Stephen Dank manipulated coach James Hird to sign-off on a controversial peptide program, by making up claims Collingwood used banned drugs. It's reported biochemist Shane Charter, who has been interviewed by ASADA, claims Dank asked him to verify the Pies were using a human growth hormone. Meantime it's reported Hird has hired prominent human rights barrister Julian Burnside QC, with ASADA due to hand down its findings into the doping scandal any day now. A 17-year-old lifesaver, who drowned on the Gold Coast yesterday, is being remembered as a rising star and a good mate. Today Reporter Aislin O'Connor joins us now. Aislin, do we know what caused this tragedy?Deb, there are reports that Jerry Dennis told some of his friends that he was experiencing chest pains shortly before he fell off his paddle board but, look, exactly what happened is something that is being investigated by police and by surf life saving Queensland. At the moment the organisation is certainly very focused on providing support to Jerry's family to, his friends and of course to all of his fellow club mates from Northcliff who has been left shocked and saddened by this tragedy. It happened at a training session here yesterday afternoon at mermaid Waters. Witnesses say that he simply fell off his paddle board and disappeared from sight. There was a frantic search for him. All of the athletes got involved. Many nearby residents came out and tried to search. Police were searching from a boat and in the air and after about 45 minutes or so his body was pulled from the water. Paramedics tried to perform CPR but sadly it was too late. It is a very difficult time for everyone involved. Take a listen to what Ky Hurst had to say last night. You know what, Sufficient Life Saving is a big family. We all seem to have each other's back and no doubt this club is a strong network of people as well. So, I'm - in times like this people pull together. So, Deb, the investigation into what happened will continue today. Meantime, all Gold Coast surf lifesavers are being offered counselling. We will leave it there. Thank you. The Prime Minister will announce a fee on bank deposit accounts in today's mini-budget. Banks say customers will bear the brunt of the 0.05% insurance scheme - costing 50 cents a month for people with a $10,000 bank deposit. The money will be set aside to protect deposits if financial institutions fail.Interest rates have dropped $5,500 on a $300,000 mortgage. If you are talking about a small impost like that to secure our ban being system it is probably a good investment The Opposition says the fee is a tax, but has not ruled out keeping it if it wins the election. 16 passengers on a Qantas flight from South America have spent the night in hospital, after suffering from an outbreak of severe gastro. Today Reporter Natalia Cooper joins us now. A terrible thing to go through. What is the latest on the condition? That is right, Deb. Well six of the patients are here at St George Hospital, they are in a stable condition. Ten were taken to Prince of Wales Hospital and they are also in a stable condition. Now, they are among the 26 people that were violently ill with gastro on this 13-hour flight from Santiago in Chile to Sydney and for them it must have been the flight from hell. Now, all of these people were young people, students from the same group. They had travelled to South America for the Pope's World Youth Day. Now, they did not catch the bug on this Qantas flight. Qantas says they contracted food poisoning before they got on the flight. But it must have also been the flight from hell for the other passengers that were on board. Let's hear from some of them now.Took a while to go to the toilet if you needed to which was a bit of a pain but other than that it was fineDoesn't seem to be food poisoning from the plane. What what I understand they had eaten different things.Very sick, yes, very, very sick. A lot of vomiting and running everywhere so they were absolutely very Victoria. There were only seven -- sick. There were only seven toilets on that plane so you do feel very, very sorry for everyone on that flight. People who were on that flight have been told they should watch their health over the next 24 to 48 hours just in case they come down with something. Thank you very much. Taking a look at the markets now:

now: A man in the US is about to embark on an ambitious journey - paddle-boarding from Havana to Florida. Ben Friberg says he's setting out on the tough task to try and improve relations between the United States and Cuba. This trip is to promote peace and love and friendship. While the 35-year-old admits it will be challenging, he's confident he can do it. Might give a few people some ideas.Yeah.We have had a few emails from people saying can we clarify what Snoop Dog was saying because he obviously went to special trouble to rofrd it so here he SUntil I get there, some of the green, you know what I'm talking about? Put to it the side until I arrive, until I get there, put it in the air, you know what I am talking about? Real slick like.I picked up "when I get there". Email us if anyone has any idea. If you speak Snoop Dog email us and let us know what you think it SI reckon dick question you would manage that translation.Time for the Drop Kicks with Erin Molan.Yes, time for Drop Kicks with Darryl Brohman and Nathan Brown in Melbourne. Nathan, first to the AFL, Essendon a big game against Collingwood on Sunday. Can they recover from the ongoing drugs saga and scrub up for the match? Collingwood has been implicated now, too? I I think the Bombers can. Every time this year they have been under pressure they have really stood up and I think as a player you don't get caught up into what is happening in the governance of the footy club. They would feel for James Hird and feel for David Evans but the players they get out there, that is what they love to do, that is what they are so good at, and they have down it all year W their two most experienced platers coming back I think they can put the week behind them and have a really solid win against the magpies who have been really inconsistent. It is incredible how well they are doing given all the off the field stuff. North Melbourne plays Geelong. Who do you like, Geelong were incredible last week?I can feet an upset coming on here. The kangaroos have been really good this year without getting the win tonnes board. They led Geelong the last time they played them. I think the pace is going to worry the Cats. When you bring in two men against a fast, slick side by the kangaroos, I think it could be a break out game for them tonight. Tonight I am going to go for the kangaroos in an upset.Beautiful, Nathan, thank you so much. Your tips now.

Look, Jeremy Cameron, the next buddy they are calling him, will he live up to it?I think he will. She a superstar. I watched him first hand last week. Four goals within ten minutes and he will be the best, second best, third best - maybe even the in the top three players for the next 20 years. Thank you so much. Now to the Big Marn for NRL. First of all Broncos can they do it?I think that can Erin. I have a feeling they can beat Newcastle Newcastle. They are a bit short of front rowers. Willie Mason injured last week. Of course Sonny Bill suspended because of - sorry, it wasn't a shoulder charge it was a high tackle. I think the Broncos were good enough last week to show they can beat the Nights. Their record is very good. Jack Reed back, maybe Ben Hannant. I can see them winning this game. You mentioned Sonny Bill out. Roosters just as strong without him?No, they are not. Nowhere near as strong. She a fantastic player. I have a feeling the pan thergs will fire up in this game, they have been average in the last two weeks and they dropped out of the right. There you can see Sonny Bill, what a shock he is returning around without a shirt on.It is hurting my eyes.Don't look, Erin. Penrith have now lost two or three in a low, it is a tough game for Penrith but I think they will make it difficulty for the roosers tonight. Your tips?I will tip the roosters in that game.

Lovely, thank you so much for your time now. Time for the weather. What about the Warriors? What about the Warriors? Here we go.Dickie. One is not happy!!Stick to entertainment, champion.Oh!! Whoa!!!I think this is entertainment, isn't it, Dickie. We will have a look at the leader boards next week.Let's do some entertainment tipping and see how guy. Big Marn can you throw to the weather as well?Yeah!!I am waking up underthe famous clock to the entrance of flienders Street station. Around about 150,000 people a day pass through here and it is projected that that number will double in the next few years. She is in line for a big facelift and remodelling and we will show you the finalists right after we look at the weather at your place today.

The Victoria government opened up a design competition for the Flinders Street station. They received entries from all around the world, including Melbourne. Some from Colombian students at Melbourne Uni and others from famous architects. Now, the original Flinders Street Station came from an open design competition so it is only fitting that the remodel is done the same way. Now, the brief was to keep the facade, much of which is heritage listed and the rest is a blank canvass. Over four hectares A lot of these designs have included markets, open flaz zas, opening up the Flinders Street Station to the Yarra River, even schools to be put inside. There are all interesting, some very fruit tris tick and you can have your -- futuristic. And you can have your say. If you would like to ad your vote go to the website, it is open until Monday, they have had 15,000 votes from around the world as far away as Uganda. The grand old lady of Melbourne is having a bit of a facelift.Good on you, Stevie. Quite the landmark. I it will be amazing. Good morning to you all. Bank taxes - tobacco taxes. So-called fat-cat car-lease taxes. Notice the pattern? The Government's got a hole in its Budget and needs to fill it before it can release its economic statement. That could happen as early as today. The only ways to fix a Budget? Cut costs, increase revenue, or taxes or sell something. But it has to be careful not to alienate the voters. So car leases - well, not everyone has one. Tobacco? Around one-in-six of the population smokes and some will want to stop. And more taxes on banks - well the big four banks make profits around $27 billion a year, so nobody will weep if banks are given a snip. Except they've flagged they'll cut interest rates or raise fees to cope with the proposed 0.05% levy - it works out at five cents a year for every $100 you have in the bank. Up to $250,000 which is where the Government already guarantees deposits. Get that point? It already does it. There's about $700 billion in deposits - so around $350 million a year. But it's strange. The Government has a Budget hole now but this measure isn't due until 2016. It's like an insurance premium in case a bank fails.I love that. I will never look at budgets the same.

look at budgets the same.

Why not.And down in lane 6 is Magnussen trying to come back. Wow, they are bunched up as they go and it is Magnussen who gets the gold!! That is a shocker. That is an absolutely shocking decision. I've got chills and they are multiplying. The stars of 'Grease' are performing live this morning. Good morning to you, it is Friday 2 August, 2013. Great to have your company. Also making news today - An investigation has been launched into the death of a 17-year-old boy who died during life saving practice on the Gold Coast. 16 Qantas passengers - most of them young people - taken to hospital, after a mystery bug causes a mid- air emergency. Taking a quick look at the weather today.

We have some great news if you are just waking up Australia. James "The Missile" Magnussen has answered his critics overnight, with a stunning win in the 100m freestyle at the world championships Take a look.A great start in lane 2, and the world record leader is in the lead, and Magnussen was well back a little bit there as he tries to come back on the field. He cannot only see Magnussen. Magnussen looks like he is going to go by Adrian.Trying to hang on up there in lane 2 and down in lane 6 is Magnussen trying to come back. Wow, they are bunched up as they go in and it is Magnussen who got the gold. There were five swimmers who came crashing into the wall all backed up.How relieved was he. Fantastic. Let's go to Amelia Ballinger in Barcelona. I will tell you what, where did he come from?(LAUGHS), he very much stepped up to the plate, didn't he? I think you mentioned before Ben, James Magnussen critics that he certainly had a lot of them. It has been a very difficult year for him in and out of the pool. Look, there were real questions going into this race as to whether he was physically and mentally capable of getting in there, performing and getting back on that podium but didn't he do an incredible job? He told he today he has really been focusing on trying to relax before the races but the pressure was well and truly on today. You have just watched a little bit of that race, at the 50m turn he wasn't in the top three. While it is nerve racking for the rest of us to watch it was amazing to see him bring it home in the last 20 or so metres. The relief on his face said it all and particularly putting in context all of the dramas on London, the disappointment of London, that is why it means so much for him.Yeah, absolutely. There was the disappointment of that unexpected silver in London. There has been the Stilnox drama earlier this year and all of the issues within the swimming team. This has been a tum outous year for James, physical family and friend but his coach said he has never once missed a training session he has turned up and worked so, so hard. That is why I think he was so relieved when he touched the wall turned around and saw number one against his name. He said the overwhelming emotion was relief but I think that is because he was too drained to feel anything else. Take a listen. This time around it was a really emotional day and race. I've put a lot behind me in the past six to 12 months and this is probably one of my proudest moments just because of what I have overcome.Good on him. Great to see. What about the rest of the team? The successes just keep coming. Special mention must go to young Cameron McEvoy. He is just 19 years ol. He raced against Magnussen in that final and came in fourth, so certainly one to watch in the lead- up to Rio. Ow heart hand working girls have done it again, they took the silver medal. They were pipped at the very end by the Americans which is a little bit disappointing but they are doing an incredible job. Plenty more to come over the next couple of days. Thank you so much for that. Amelia Ballinger joins us from Barcelona. It is all good. Thank you, Ben. Essendon coach James Hird has called in the lawyers amid reports he will try to block ASADA's findings from being made public. Today reporter Christine Ahern joins us. Chris, just take us through this latest move by Hird and the repercussions because it is surely to upset the AFL.Yeah, that is right, Georgie. They won't be thrilled because it does pit the Essendon coach firmly against the AFL. According to the Australian newspaper, James Hird has engaged the services of top human rights lawyer Julian Burnside QC as ASADA prepares to hand down its report into its six-month investigation into the supplement program run here at Windy Hill. Mr Burnside won't only just lead Hird's response to the ASADA report, but also possibly an injunction against the contents of that report being made public if it is found that no player here at Essendon has in fact taken banned substances. The club reportedly worried about the AFL's involvement in the hearings. The league has rejected this and always maintains that they want the findings of this report made public no matter what they are.Meantime, several other clubs have been drawn into this saga, Chris, but this morning some vindication for Collingwood. Tell us more about that. That is right H is coming out of 'Age' newspaper this morning. It is saying that sacked sports scientist Stephen Dank told James Hird that Collingwood was using human growth hormone, an unfounded allegation all to try to manipulate the Essendon coach to get the peptide program over the line. This is all coming from biochemist Shane Charter who is a also a drug trafficer. He is claiming that Dank came to him and told him to try to convince Hird that Collingwood were using human growth hormones, however Charter has said he has never sold or supplied any supplements to Collingwood and has no knowledge of any supplement program run at Collingwood. The Pies have also denied any of their players have ever taken any banned substances. In the wake of all of this, Essendon has to try and get their focus back on football on Sunday. They have a big match against the Pies at the MCG. But they did receive some good news - captain Jobe Watson back from a broken collarbone. That is right, there is football still to play. Thank you. Over to you, Deb. From 450 we are talking to relatives who are obviously distraught and the neighbours and then we will try and back track some movements of the deceased person and any others who may be involved. The woman has not been identified and detectives say it's too early to determine when she died. Surf Life Saving Queensland is to launch an investigation, after a 17-year- old drowned during a training exercise on the Gold Coast late yesterday afternoon. Jerry Dennis disappeared after falling off his board and into a canal at Mermaid Waters, prompting a large search. He's being remembered as a rising star and a good mate. Jerry's death is another blow to surf life saving, which has already lost three teenage competitors at the Australian Championships, since 1996. Passengers on board a Sydney- bound Qantas flight have likened the trip as a flight from hell after a nasty gastro outbreak onboard. The 26 Melbourne school students who suffered the outbreak had been returning from world youth day celebrations in Brazil.Very sick, yes, very, very sick A lot of vomiting and running everywhere, so they were absolutely very sick. All affected passengers were quarantined upon arrival - 16 were taken to hospital. First it was smokers, now anyone with a bank account will be targeted as the government looks to fill its budget black hole. Today the Prime Minister will announce plans to impose a 0.05% levy on savings of up to $250,000, saying that the move will secure our banking system. There will be more details about this over the next few days, but the IMF and other banking institutions have said it is important that we have a strong banking system and that this was a gap in our banking system. It is also worth remembering that since we came to government the average person who has a $300,000 mortgage is paying $5,500 less in interest. They had ten interest rate rises under the Howard government. Interest rates have dropped $5,500 on a $300,000 mortgage. If you are talking about a small impost like that to secure our banking system it is a good investment. We will respond to the whole package but it is just a tax. It is modelled presumably on the Cyppriot ban being hmm -But you are not planning on ruling it outWe will respond holistic tay - Holisticically?Yes, we will respond to the whole enchalada. You are just transfer reference there. What is interesting is this new tax on bank deposits which can be owned, which is only going to result in depositers getting lower interest receipts so that will be tough on anyone who is a saver, anyone who is a retire', etc, but it has been talked about as how it is somehow or other to fund the deposit Ghana fee. If it is going to fund the deposit guarantee it should be going into a separate escrow fund and not be part of the government's revenues that it can use for all of its ore expenditures but it seems to me to be just another tax.To the US now and life in prison without parole, plus 1,000 years. That was the sentence handed down to Ariel Castro, the man who kept three women as prisoners in his home for ten years. Nine's US correspondent Denham Hitchcock joins us now. One of Castro's victims took the stand. It was very brave. What did she have to say?It was, it was Michelle Knight, one of three women who survived that house of horrors. She was the first one abducted, she was in there for 11 years, raped, beaten, formal she miscarryed five times. But all accounts she took the worst of the punishment handed out by Ariel Castro. That is her in court. He was defiant today. She took the stand as as she said, as she told Ariel Castro, "I will live on, you will die a little every day."You took 11 years of my life away and I have got it back. I spent 11 years in hell. Now your hell is just beginning. Now today was also a chance forecast cast cast himself to address the court and it -- for Ariel Castro himself to address the court, it was repulsive. He attempted to justify what he had done. He is a man in severe denial. He said he was not violent, that he lived in a harmonious house, that all three girls enjoyed living there, but its with an addiction, he blamed the girls, the FBI. He had teared for himself but none for his victims. Take a listen. (- tears for himself but not for his victims. Take a listen. You look at me like a Monday thester, but I am not a monster, I am a normal person, I am just sick. I have an addiction. Just like an alcoholic has an addiction. Alcoholics cannot control her addiction. That is why I couldn't control my addiction. It was almost 900 charges in all, all relating to those three girls all taken when they were just
