TONY JONES: Just a day after fire authorities warned of a horror summer, the bush fire season has
begun in New South Wales with 20 outbreaks across the state.

At least two homes have been destroyed north of Newcastle after fires jumped containment lines.

Water-bombing helicopters were called in when difficult terrain inhibited fire crews on the ground.

LOU CASSAR, NSW RURAL FIRE SERVICE: A state of emergency, a section 44, has been declared, so we'll
work progressively through that now and bring in reinforcements from other areas.

TONY JONES: And another big bushfire is burning out of control tonight on the outskirts of Sydney
in the Ku-rng-gai National Park.
