This program is captioned live. This is Nine's News Hour.Good morning, a 27-year-old man has just faced court in Queensland, charged with dlibrltly lighting fires in the Lockyer Valley. Let's go live outside the court in Ipswich. What can you tell us, Joel?27-year-old bafpgman has just faced court -- Benjamin has just faced court. All of these offences are alleged to have occurred between 14th September and 10th October this year. All of them in and around the Blenheim and Mt Merryman area where he does live. He was arrested a couple of days go as part of a join operation with the arson unit, the Queensland fire service and the RFS. The investigation was starked after some 60 fires have occur since July this year in and around that Lockyer Valley area, all of which endangered topic. It is a very heated top frequent property owners around the area. Today they were in court, keen to look at the man. But when we spoke to his lawyer after he left court, he didn't make an application for bail. He stressed in his opinion, the case against him is weak and he told us he maintenances his innocence. Prosecution have to prove beyond reasonable doubt he is guilty. I haven't seen it to this stage. What is the latest on the current fire threat there?Well, as of late last night, there were still about 40 fires burning from GreenBank West of Brisbane through the Lockyer Valley, Grantham and Crows Nest. There are a lot of fires burning but thankfully, most are classed as under control. The unfortunate element for firefighters is the coming days. We are being told this weekend is going to be particularly nasty with temperatures starting to soar again and a win change that firefighters have said will make life very difficult if more fires are sparked and of course, putting out the ones that are already under way.Thank you for the update. Mean time, firefighters in NSW are bracing for a horror day. A total ban is in place for Sydney, the Illawarra and Hunter. A cooler change is expected tonight. Authorities say if fires brake out in the conditions forecast are very difficult to control and pose a threat to homes. Melbourne's Monash freeway has reopened after a fatal crash stopped traffic this morning during peak hours. There were very distresss scenes here this morning. It is believed the man was struck by the vehicle around 5:45am and earlier, one of his relatives came to the scene. It was quite upsetting. It is believed that vehicle that struck him was heading towards the city. It is unclear how it unfolded but there is damage to the side of his car. The other driver is assisting police with inquiries. The road has reopened but it was closed until 8:40 between Clive Road and Berwick/Cran burn Road. Police are still investigating.A 29-year-old man has almost had his finger severed in a take away shop in western Sydney and deep cuts to his back. An 18-year-old worker at the shop has been charged with malicious wounding. Our reporter is at the scene. We will cross live to him later in the bulletin. As soon as is under even more pressure to pass on any future interest rate cuts after posting an annual profit. Cash proft rose 2% to $5.7 billion. Despite the strong result, the CEO, Mike Smith, warns conditions are expected to become more challenging in the year ahead. Senior Julia Gillard Government ministers are warning against prejudging Craig Thomson given no charges have been laid against him. It follows police raids against his former office and home. Lane, what has been said in Canberra?Nothing more from Craig Thomson but as you say, ministers have been defending his right to remain in parliament midreports Victoria Police may be close to charging him. This morning Simon Crean joined calls to remember the presumption of innocence. No charges have been laid. And people shouldn't be asked to do anything until such time as either they are or are found guilty, certainly, they shouldn't be prejudged. And I think we've just got to let the investigations run their course. Lane, just on another issue, the Government seems to be in a bit of trouble over its mining tax?Yes, according to the 'Australian' newspaper, it hasn't raised a cent in revenue in the first 3 months. If that is true, the Government says it doesn't comment on the matters, it casts a shadow over the Budget surplus. The projected revenue was written in the mid-year update. Here is Simon Crean again and Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey. It was never projected to raise it in the early part. It's lateter raises it, why won't it raise it in the early part? Because these mining companies are making massive investments in infrastructure, which is tax deduxable. The grand mining tax is a failure and it was directly designed by Julia Gillard and Wayne Swan. The surplus has gone, stop the charade. There is no surplus. The fact that they are playing games with the numbers and deceiving the Australian people proves yet again this Government is just in the business of root-and- branch lying to the Australian people. Their incompetence is only matched by their inability to tell the truth.Another problem for the Government, the business tax working group, set up to find a way to cut the company tax hasn't been able to find one recommendation over 12 months of work.OK, thank you for that. We will leave it there for now. An injured driver has spent the night under police guard in hospital after crashing his car following a police chase on a major Sydney freeway. Police began pursuing the man after he was ledgedly seen speeding near Thornleigh just after 5am. A short time later, the man plowed into a set of traffic lights and two other vehicles. He suffered minor injuries, the other drivers were not hurt. Authorities have recovered the surf board of a man killed by a shark off the coast of California. Vicious bite marks indicate a great white is the most likely cull cht and there are calls for it to be hunted and killed. A man surfing in the waters just north of Santa Barbara was killed by an apparent shark attack. Witnesses say 39-year-old Francisco Javier Solario was bitten in the upper torso while surfing with a friend. He pulled him out of the water and immediately began CPR. Vandenberg Air Force Base Fire Department responded to the scene, but it was too late. The coroner's office has recovered the body and will do a full investigation to determine where the victim was bit, any injuries that were inflicted from that bite.He was a really good surfer, you know. Like I say, I spent a lot of time with him. There have been frequent shark sightings off the coast of this Santa Barbara beach over the last several months. The beaches are closed and the hunt is on for a killer shark. This incident marks the second fatal shark attack on this beach within the past two years. In October, 2010, 19-year- old college student Lucas Ransom was killed when a great white shark appeared out of nowhere and pulled him under. The water is pretty unpredictable, you know. There's too many sharks out here, man. That's my opinion. I wouldn't dare go in there.Could be a breeding ground for sharks. You know, you never know. Something's here that they like.A suburb in Sydney pest west has been covered in snow for the fillisming of the latest 'Wolverine' movie. Tomorrow, the kids teaching grownups how to cook. And there is a $30,000 jackpot. Now, back to the morning news. Thank you, to the US now where the latest poll show women are the most undecided voters two weeks out from the presidential election. Mitt Romney has taken a hit in that demographic after he made controversy comments about rape and abortion. What did he have to say?Yes, thren days out from the election and Republican senator Richard Murdoch has opened old wounds. Bear in mind they are campaigning and badly need women's votes. That is Mitt Romney there, he stands in his corner and still does today. They are behind by 14 points with women. Part of that is the problem for the Republican, many are antiabortion. Mitt Romney is also antiabortion but not right across the board. There are some circumstances he says he will allow it. But some have no flexibility. Mr Murdoch is one of those. We will play the clip. You can see the trouble it is stirring up with female voters.I came to realise that life is a guilt of gade, even when it starts from the horrible situation of rape, god intend td to happen. No surprises. And Donald Trump has a terrible history with Barack Obama's past and me is trying to revisit that. The Trump, you have got to love him. Some people think he is a master of publicity and others say he will do anything for cameras. He said he had an announcement that would change the presidential race, some thought it was divorce papers for the Obamas but when it came down to it, it was the berther issue, which has Republicans knocking their heads against the walls. No-one believes that President Obama was born anywhere but here in the US but the Donled, the Trump believes it and issued this challenge overnight. If Barack Obama opens up and gives his college records and applications and if he gives his passport applications and records, I will give to a charity of his choice, inner city children of chucogo, American Cancer Society, AIDS research, anything he wants, a cheque, immediately, for $5 million. Well, you got to love him. At least for the theater, haven't you? No- one in the Democrats are commenting today and nown in the Republican Party is commenting. That also says a lot. The dawnled, the Trump, fell flat today I'm afraid.Thank you. A re noun brain surgeon in the US has issued statement that is challenging his years of work. He said he went to heaven and is convinced of life after death. At this home, grace is different now. He is a Harvard neurosurgeon who nearly died four years ago when a ferocious ecoal i meningitis virus attacked his brain. Brain scans that shows all parts of his brain that give us conscious thought and memory were not afunctioning. It should be a rich network but we don't see that because they are all filled with puss.Doctors gave him up for death but after a week, he ewoke with, he said, a wondrous memory. Did you go to heaven?Yes, I was rescued by a beautiful, spinning white light that had an indescribably beautiful melody that opened up into a bright valley.God was there, he said, as a presence of love and there was a young woman who soared across heaven with him on a butterfly wing with a message to take back.. The concepts came into my mind, you are loved, you are cherished, there is nothing to fear, there is nothing you can do wrong. The wuemsnn after the recovery he saw a picture of his long-dead sister he had never met, it was her.It was the most profound experience I have ever had in this life.A lot of people will say, "Dr, it was a hallucination?.". I know what really occurred outside of my brain. Many of his colleagues and neurosurgeons are keeply sceptical, saying his brain must have produced them after he awoke but he said it is inconsistent with a brain rebooting. Our soul, our consciousness, our spirit doesn't depend on the existence of the brain and body at all.The royals could have been forgiven for thinking they were in Australia last night with 200 of our most prominent expats attending a palace party hosted by Prince Charles and Camilla. It was to celebrate their upcoming visit to Australia, New Zealand and PNG. Kylie was on hand to entertain guests with a favourite. It has been such a brilliant year to be in my home, the UK. So to send the royals off on this trip, it felt fitting to be part of the farewell for them. I was very honoured to be asked. Barry Humphries, Jason Donovan were also at the do. More effective treatment for pancreatic cancer may be on the horizon after Australian scientists unlocked the DNA structure of the tumours. The results identified more than 2,000 genetic mutations. One thing we are starting to understand, if we target drugs that target particular genetic abnormalities, it underpins personalized medicine, about giving the right patient the right drug at the right time at the right costs and with the right outcome. Scientists say some of the patients who had their treatment tweaked during the study have already lived beyond expectations. I'm at my house, someone got if to my house. Can you get out of your house safely?I'll try. She said she could hear the men talking.OK, now I actually know they're planning something, so, I was pretty scared.Following the directions of the 911 dispatcher, she decided to make a break for it. Were you scared they were going to hear you?Not exactly, because I didn't care at the moment, I was trying to get out thf the house as quick as I could. She said she hid under a tree in the front yard and spotted her mum, but her mum didn't see her.Mummy! Mummy! No, don't go in there, mummy! My mum went inside..I was hoping they didn't have guns or anything that they could have hurt my mum with. They didn't and police soon arrived, arresting one of the alleged burglars while two others ran away. Welcome back. These are the top stories. A Queensland man has faced court, charged with deliberately lighting fires in the Lockyer Valley as firefighters battle at least 27 blazes in extreme conditions around the state. A 21- year-old woman will front a central Queensland court today charged with torturing children. And Wayne Swan has refused to comment on reports the mining tax hasn't delivered any money in eits first three month. A man has just faced court in Ipswich, south-west of Brisbane, accused of deliberately lighting bushfires. It comes as fires continue to burn around the state. There were 65 burning across the state yesterday, that figures has been revised done to 27 due to favourable conditions overnight. The biggest concern was fires at Greenbank and Ravenwarn. There were major concerns for property yesterday, residents were issued with a watch-and-act warning and told to evacuate. That was cancelled at around 6:30 last night. The smoke haze has reduced considerably right across the south-east. Today is a fine day, a top of 28. The winds aren't going to be too bad. Tomorrow is the major concern, looking at a northerly wind sweeping through which will sure ly flare up some of the fires and top of 32. Residents of XP greenback are being invited to a community meeting tonight at 7 clk to voice their concerns and get answers to any questions. We are told this will be one of the worst fire seasons the crews have seen in five years. What is making the situation hard sr the fact that a lot of these -- harder is the fact that a lot of the crews are facing cuts. Those who train the volunteers are looking at 56 going. You think about the fact the RFS is in charge of protecting 93% of the state, it is a huge amount to be cut. What they will do is rely on the remaining staff and the 34,000 volunteers but they say they have been battling these financial issues for years. We run on the smell of an oily rag, we have done for years. I think the recent proposals, they have taken away the oil. With tough times ahead, what we need now is rain and that is something we won't see until at least Saturday. A child care worker charged with torture over the alleged torture of children is facing court today. What can you tell us from Moranbah? The 21-year- old was due to appear in court but so far she is two and a half hours late. The court is becoming concerned. It is the first time she has faced court on charges of torture, and deprivation of liberty. She is accused of taping a two - year-old girl's legs together to stop her getting out of bed and spraying them with water to control their behaviour. The centre is run by the children and temporarily closed, underwent a full audit and has reopened. The 17 staff there are under going training. It has started a huge element of concern here in the community. 72 children attend and they are worried it will generate anger. Part of the reason the childcare worker has not turned up is that she has gone into hiding and has received threats. The court is waiting. If she doesn't turn up, a warrant may be issued for her arrest.Thank you for the update on thet shocking story. Another cloud on the story of the Budget surplus. The mining tax is reported not to have delivered a cent. Wayne Swan continues to insist he will deliver a surplus and it is affected by outside factors. We wrote down resource taxes by $7 billion, there4 billion for the MRRT because a profits-based tax is a tax which delivers revenues when prices are really high. This is a lose-lose tax. Only the Labor Party could introduce a confidence-destroying, investment-destroying tax and then not raise any money. The Coalition says the surplus won't be achieved. A man's finger has been almost severed at a brawl in a take-away shop in Sydney's west. Good morning. Talk us through what happened? About 9:30 last night at the chicken shop here at Woodcraft Centro shopping right, right on closing time, police say a 29-year- old man has arrived in a taxi, the man who suffered the injuries. There was a confrontation with an 18-year-old man who worked inside the store. It is believed they do know each other and had a prior disagreement over a girl. A number of punches were thrown before the pair were separated by a number of men and it was found the older man had sustained serious lacerations to his back and hand, the finger was partially severed. He was raced off to Westmead Hospital where he is being treated for the injuries and faces the prospect of losing a fick finger, the injuries are su-- finger the injuries are so severe. Police are looking into the ain the sudant. They are unsure how the injuries have been inflicted. They are back here going over CCTV vision from inside the chicken shop and the shopping centre as they try to piece it together. At this stage, they have charged the 18-year-old man who works at the shop with malicious wounding. He will appear in Blacktown local court this morning. The circumstances surrounding the entire incident are under investigation and police are continuing their work.Thank you. Victorian premier ted bail you is about to make a formal apology to women who were the subject of forced adoptions between the 1950 and in1970s. Thousands are gathering at state parliament. This aapology has been a long time coming, in some cases 50 to 60 years. It goes to mothers, fathers and also adopted children who were affected by a practice that pervaded the 1950, 1960s and 1970s where mothers were forced or coerced into giving up their children. A lot of people have horrific stories that still cause them pain and anguish to this day. I'm joined by Helen, who is an adopted child, 50 years ago today. Tell us about your story.I was adopted at three weeks old. I have tried to find my natural mother but aren't been able to. I would like to say to all the relinquishing mums they were appreciated by all the children, where they are able to get in touch or not. This apology has been a long time coming. What is the significance for you? The significance is that it helps break that secrecy that had been put in place by churches, institutions and governments to try to protect society from single mums and children. So, it's really important that the State Government actually matches up -- actually matches up all the parties who rur involved in all these processes years go and allows people have have their genetic identity and provide support and closure for women who went through horrendous circumstances.Helen, I hope the apology today has a potential meaning to you and starts to heal some of those wounds, and the backup follows from that, the funding from counselling and hopefully legislative changes as well.Thank you.The apology today will be heard by thousands of those affected people. As has been mentioned, really, it is seen as a fairly empty apology unless there is following funding for counselling and legislative changes to allow those adopted to find their missing biological relatives. Now to a monkey that has become a ledgeant in southern Florida. After years on the run, he was finally caught today and is being hailed with one of America's most intelligent fugitives. This was one slippery monkey who kept escaping the clutch of authorities, living the life, swinging through trees in south Florida, travelling more than 100 miles. We know he has been hanging round the Tampa area for roughly three years. He is a very resourceful little monkey. At first, families were frightened but then started cheering him on and legend was born. He has songs in his name. Once announced he was running for mayor on Twitter and told nearly 90,000 Facebook fans his freedom has been taken waw way. Authorities think he sas lost pet. Three weeks owner he was with a home owner here so they set up a trap with bananas, he got in and out three times with bananas in hand but today authorities were waiting and busted out of the bushes with tranquilisers in hand. He's sleeping it off.Florida authorities props he won't be harmed. We will check him if for microchips ortat tews. After years on the run, he nodes a home and a friend. They die badly. With inCIA scramling to come up with a plan to get them out of the country. Deliver the six bikes, provide them with maps.Or just send in training wheels and met them at the border. Tony, played by Ben Affleck, comes up with an audacious plan to make a fake movie. You want to Hollywood and like a big shot without doingening anything?Yep.You will fit in.So the hunt is on to find a suitable script. Adding a touch of humour along the way, John Goodman is the Hollywood make-up artist and Alan Larkin, the producer. If I'm doing a fake movie, it will be fake hit. These two are hilarious and add levitys the action heats up in Iran. You are asking us to trust you with our lives. If you happen what happened, you know what will happened. If you don't", or even if you do, you will be riveted. It is an amazing film and this is a brilliant film. In fact, it is one of the best of the year, with all sorts of Oscar buzz, for Ben, director George Clooney and everyone involved.
