Food Wastage



The amount of food wasted today will be enough to feed the world's starving people - all one
billion of them. Finding ways to minimise the waste could help meet the 70 per cent increase in
demand for food that is expected by 2050.


Six point seven billion humans on earth, one billion of us hungry. That's more people than the
combined populations of the United States, Canada, and the European Union.

Industrialised nations throw away around two-hundred and twenty-two million tonnes of perfectly
edible food each year. That's as much food as sub-Saharan Africa produces annually.

In Australia, the average person chucks out one-hundred and thirty-six kilos of food a year, at a
cost of six-hundred bucks per household, per annum. Developing countries lose about one hundred and
fifty million tonnes of grains per annum to inadequate storage, flood, drought and pests. That's
six times the food needed to feed the starving billion.

The good news? In Africa and Pakistan, the use of metal containers is cutting losses by up to
seventy per cent. In London, Melbourne and across the US, millions of kilos of excess food is being
re-directed away from dumpsters and into hungry mouths.

The bad news? Global population is set to reach over nine billion by 2050, increasing the demand
for food by seventy per cent. Now that truly is food for thought.
