Keeping in mine, households are feeling the pinch and it is not great news for consumer sentiment and the retail sector. So stock up now seems to be the message, do it early in the week. Time for sport now. Kochie, a very good One Direction mourning. Ben Te'o's appearance at the NRL Judiciary tonight is being viewed as a test case for the future of the shoulder charge. The Broncos forward has been named for Friday's clash against the Raiders but faces a 4-match dangerous contact suspension for a shoulder charge on Tigers prop Matt Groat. It's not a case of whether it's fair or not I think we're just going to deal with the facts. We believe that we can mount a strong defence. If Ben Te'o's found guilty of that, that means the shoulder-charge tackle, in any shape or form, is no longer part of our game. Brisbane's defence will be based around a similar hit from Bulldog Frank Pritchard which only resulted in a 1-week ban. The AFL admits it was a mistake to schedule both Greater Western Sydney and Gold Coast in the only two matches on Easter Sunday. The result wasn't pretty, the Giants copping a 129-point thrashing from North Melbourne and the Suns losing by 92 points to St Kilda. The AFL admits it was a soft day of footy but urged fans to be patient with the expansion clubs. A half-century from Ryan Harris has pushed Australia to a solid total on day four of the first test against the West Indies. Harris was unbeaten on 68 when Michael Clarke declared at 9/406, still 43 runs behind. The declaration paid immediate dividends with Ben Hilfenhaus snaring three quick wickets. Harris then dismissed danger man Shivnarine Chanderpaul. The Windies are now 4/39, with 82-run lead. Bi, is there some excitement here this morning. You have only got to say One Direction and boom! Morning. I tell you, they are going to be so quiet tomorrow, none of those girls are going to have any voices loft. It is pretty remarkable. Symphony in motion. What's next? # (SCREAMING) # The plaza # The plaza outside Brekky Central hasn't been like this since we last had a spunky singer on by the name of Justin Bieber. What is the estimate? A few thousand, the police are telling us. So far, everyone is stay safe. They are the British boy band that has taken the world by storm. Now One Direction are in Australia and on their way to Brekky Central. Reporter Edwina Bartholomew has been briefed by police while our James Tobin is with fans on the Plaza. James, I notes you slipped into something that makes you look like a member of One Direction, how is it working out? I can't hear a thing because it seems like it is One Direction, one sound. They are the real heroes of the morning, aren't they, Eddy, all the parents who brought their kids here. Tell us about the security precautions in place. Slightly quieter over here until we discovered they were on the other side of the crowd to James, a couple of noble parent who have come down, very brave souls. The right thing to do, I must say. It is what we recommended thatids bring their parents. Here is Scott, the head of Channel Seven security, since we found out One Direction were coming, it has been a carefully orchestrated arrangement with police, the building management and City Council. Lots of police. You can see it a barricade has been set up around the area to keep the screaming teenage fans away from commuters. With Justin Bieber in 2010, it was a public holiday so we might not have the issues today we might have with Elizabeth street. If took a personal flee from Justin Bieber to get the crowds to move on. We might need the same today. Good to know it is all safe and the roads are block. There is probably a lot of parents watching, anxious their kids are going to be OK. We have taken every precaution. Police are saying they are terrific, the kids are well behaved. They are here for a good time, that is what being 13, 14 is all about. Ahead this Sunrise - the carbon tax to hit charities. Also making news - calls for Aborigines to stage protest marches on Anzac Day. Canberra tent embassy founder Michael Anderson says Aborigines should demonstrate against massacres committed during what he calls the "frontier wars". And he says former Aboriginal servicemen should boycott the RSL march. So, is Anzac Day the time for such protests? There were calls like this last year. Tell us what you think. I think they actually marched under this flag last year at the back of the march. I can't remember hearing much about it last year? Good. Well. We are commemorating people who fought offshore, we should be doing everything we can to unite, not divide. It is not to say they don't have a point. But you are not doing yourself any favours by doing it Anzac Day. You will get people yourself any favours by doing it on arcing up against you. A 23-year-old postie could be charged after a stunt on his work bike went viral. Days after resigning from Australia Post, he set up a makeshift jump in a suburban street on Victoria's Surf Coast during his daily round. The man came off the bike, taking some skin off his hip and arm. He apparently told his boss he hit an animal. Police have now viewed the video and are investigating. Have you ever done something extreme after quitting? Look, I must out my husband, who did hit a roo in the GWN car on the way back from Albany. But he did tell his boss. News time now. A deadly Gold Coast beach that's claimed the lives of three teenage surf lifesavers will be dumped as the venue for the sport's national titles. 14-year-old Matthew Barclay last month became the third competitor to be killed at Kurrawa Beach during the Surf Life Saving Championships. Surf Life Saving Australia says the decision was made out of respect for the three victims and a new location will be announced in the coming months. Miami police have supported claims Matthew Newton was involved in a scuffle at the bar where he was arrested on the weekend. A police report has backed up claims initially made by the owner of Mr Moe's bar. The one that was involved in the argument, the dispute, was asked to leave the restaurant all left and this particular gentleman came back even after being warned not to come back. It's believed the 35-year-old is expected to plead not guilty to charges of trespass and resisting police. Police are investigating a shooting in Sydney's west overnight. A 20-year-old male attended a hospital in Westmead with a gunshot wound to his leg. Officers believe he may have been fired on at a street in Granville. Anyone with information is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers. Drivers are being warned to fill up now with petrol prices expected to hit record highs by the end of the week. Economists say petrol could climb to $1.60 in most capital cities, the highest levels seen in 3.5 years. We're expecting the pump prices will rise by about another 2 cents a litre over the next fortnight. It's going to mean further pain ahead. Tensions over Iran's nuclear program are being blamed for the rise. More than 120 workers at a Melbourne-based car parts manufacturer are facing a nervous wait after the company was placed into receivership. APV Automotive Components, which is based in Coburg, says It's blaming a drop in orders of parts from Holden, Toyota and Ford. I believe they would have been shocked. This is a difficult news to take in any circumstances. They've obviously have some cash-flow problems. There is an issue in that they are carrying some extra heads. The company's receivers say they're hoping to meet with staff today to discuss their future. American Republican candidate Rick Santorum has ended his bid for the White House. The former senator made the announcement in his home state of Pennsylvania ahead of a primary vote there later this month. The Hawks believe the contact was accidental and unavoidable but risk losing Whitecross for two matches if they head to the tribunal. Meanwhile, West Coast veteran Andrew Embley will go under the knife today after dislocating his shoulder against the Demons. The midfielder will be sidelined for around 10 weeks. St George-Illawarra has even more cash to splash in the NRL player market following Dean Young's decision to retire. The 28-year-old is sick of battling a chronic knee problem and will hang up his boots at season's end. Former Dragons coach Wayne Bennett says Young was his inspiration during his time at the club and expects him to forge a successful career in coaching. Football Federation Australia is preparing for a massive legal struggle over Nathan Tinkler's shock decision to hand back the Newcastle Jets' A-League license. FFA is reportedly preparing a damages claim worth in excess of $50 million but it's likely they'll have to fund the Jets in the short term. Tinkler's Hunter Sports Group claims it has lost confidence in the FFA. Not that you care too much, you've got 1D. We'll tucker down on the food. And going viral this morning - is video of a girl being blown through the air and into a wall by the power of an aircraft engine. That hurts. Stupid. She was plane spotting on the Caribbean island of Saint Martin when the accident occurred. The island's airport has a short runway, meaning aircraft have to land and take-off from as close as possible to the end of the track. So, standing in the turbulence behind planes on the beach is a popular way to pass time. But it all ended in tears, when the woman was blasted into a low concrete wall. Signs on the beach warn of the risk of injury or death from jet blasts but it appears not everyone takes notice of the warnings. That is that mace you see pictures on the Internet and people laying on the beach and the jet comes in low over top. That is the jet. So switch to the genuinely fairer bank - ME Bank. Fine and 25. A 13-year-old boy has shown maturity and driving skills well beyond his years. The American teenager took control of a runaway school bus and saved his classmates. Our US correspondent Mike Amor has the story. Good morning. Mike, take us through how this unfolded. Yes, my little boy is about to catch the school bus to school, so this is certainly not a story that parents want to to hear. But when the driver of this school bus collapsed, thank God there was a little boy on board who was brave and quick thinking. Let's have a look. Just any ordinary day. That's what it should have been for the students of Surprise Lake Middle School in Washington. But their morning took a dramatic turn on board the school bus. The bus driver starts convulsing, and his eyes are bulging. He's making weird rasping noises and his hands are twitching. The driver suffered what appeared to be a seizure. And the vehicle began rolling out of control. I was just thinking, " I was just thinking, "I don't want to die." to die.". That's when 13-year-old Jeremy Wuitschick sprang into action. Grabbed the wheel, he was big, I took it saot side of the road, took the keys out of the ignition, bus started slowing down, I was like, " started slowing down, I was like, "Someone call 9 1 1." "Someone call 9 1 1.". My principle said I am going to gret free snacks because we have a snack cart over there, hopefully I don't get too many, it will be free snack bars! The 13-year-old's still a few years away from getting his L-plates. So, how did he know how to regain control of the bus? It seems that was his mum's little secret. She lets me back the car out of the driveway so I can give it a carwash. Don't tell my dad that, OK! His dad probably won't be too upset. Not only did Jeremy stop the bus, he also performed CPR on the driver until the ambulance arrived. Sadly, the drive is not in great shape in hospital but at least the kids are safe. The kids deserved a medal. Yes, he does, a great kid. There is a push to crack down on free-range egg farms. MPs in South Australia and New South Wales are trying to introduce a law that would lower the number of chickens kept on a hectare. Egg producers would only be able to claim products are free-range if their farm kept no more than 1,500 hens per hectare. That's compared to the current industry standard of up to 20,000 hens, as stipulated by the industry's biggest body, Egg Corporation. But what do any of these labels really mean? Ingrid Just from consumer group Choice is here to break it down for us. There has got to be a few puns in this conversation. That is OK. Tell us the main labels we see on the cartons and what they mean? Free range, as we have spoken about. You might find organic free change and that means the have been eating feed that is that means the chooks themselves organicically grown or pastures. You might frined cage free or barn-laid eggs. That means the chooks are in a barn and they are not in a cage. Now, it doesn't mean that there are a certain number of chooks per barn. They might be very couded in there but they are still not in cages. And then you find caged eggs, where chooks are in the very small cages and not able to behave naturally. Sometimes the cages are as big as an A 4 piece of paper. In our house we call them 'Happy chook eggs." call them 'Happy chook eggs' you have the picture of happy barns and fields. But it is not? There is discrepancy what is free change. There is no standard. Consumers are pay agpremium for free range. It could range from 7,000 to 20,000. Last night I was doing a bit of shopping, egg shadowing and I found organic free range for $ organic free range for $9. organic free range for $9.95. Consumers don't know whether it is true free range. What do we look for? Look out for particular logos, the Australian satisfied organic logo, around 1,000 chooks per hectare and the RSPCA, about 1500 chooks her hectare. You have some understanding of a certain level of free range. Thanks for doing shadow shopping for us last night. Thank you. A deadly Gold Coast beach, which has claimed the lives of three teenage surf lifesavers, is set to be dumped as the venue for the sport's national championships. The safety of Kurrawa Beach was again put into question last month following the death of 14-year-old Matt Barclay. Kurrawa Beach on the Gold Coast is notorious for its big surf and rough conditions. Just last month, young surf lifesaver Matt Barclay lost his life in the swell. His death renewed calls for the sport's national championships to be moved. We wouldn't let our juniors compete, it's too much of a responsibility. After a meeting yesterday Surf Life Saving officials agreed to move next year's event to another beach. They say they'll advise Events Australia and the Gold Coast City Council of their decision. Matt Barclay was the third competitor to die at Kurrawa. 15-year-old Robert Gatenby was killed at the championships in 1996. Saxon Bird died in 2010. Surf Life Saving boss Brett Williamson says the move is out of respect for the three victims and their families. He says: A new location will be announced in the coming months. Police are trying to work out where Sydney's latest shooting victim was shot. The 20-year-old man arrived at Westmead Hospital bleeding heavily just after midnight. He was hit in the leg. Investigating officers have been sent to a street in Granville. Anyone with information is being asked to contact Crime Stoppers. A police report into Matthew Newton's arrest has backed up claims the troubled actor was involved in a scuffle before being detained by police. It's believed the 35-year-old is getting ready to fight the charges against him. US correspondent Angela Cox has the latest. Matthew Newton emerged from his Miami hotel about midday, local time. He was looking pretty relaxed in front of the cameras, even stopping to shake the hand of the doorman and have a quick chat. He was picked up by the woman who posted his bail, Australian documentary maker Allison Thompson. His lawyer is worried he is suicidal, is it something you think or is he holding up? I can't comment. He is a human that needs some help, you know. Police have now released the arrest affidavit and an injury report filed by the off-duty police officer who had the run-in with Matthew Newton. It is pretty brief. It is alleged Newton used colourful language screaming at the police, "F--- you, cop." "You treat me like this because I'm Australian." The police officer wrote he noticeed the red mark on Newton ffs face. as he was led out by a security guard. When asked what happened he was told Newton had a fight inside the bar. The dispute - was asked, to leave the restaurant and they all left and this particular gentleman came back, even after being warned not to come back. Police didn't test to see if had been drinking or had taken drugs. They said it is not standard procedure in a case like this. Court records show Newton's US lawyer has submitted paperwork indicating he plans to plead not guilty and is demanding a trial. No date has been set for his court appearance. The owners of Sydney's Star casino have denied claims of a drug cover up made at a public inquiry. A key witness yesterday claimed cocaine use by high rollers was hidden and former boss Sid Vaikunta repeatedly used the drug at work. It's alleged his nickname was 'Sniffing Sid'. In a statement released last night Echo Entertainment said the allegations were false. It's believed more than 50 people have been killed in Syria on the day a UN-brokered ceasefire agreement was meant was meant to come into effect. The regime has come out saying it is abiding by the peace deal but new video posted online suggests the bloodshed is far from over. It shows government forces continuing to fire on rebel fighters. UN-Arab-League envoy Kofi Annan has accused President Bashar al-Assad of withdrawing troops from some areas and moving them to different locations. Relatives of some of the passengers who went down with the 'Titanic' have thrown flowers into the water where the ill-fated ship set sail 100 years ago. A memorial cruise is retracing the journey the ship never completed. This woman's grandfather was a 27-year-old baker on board. He was going to open up a baker shop in Southampton, that's why they wanted the money - to do go and earn some money to do this bakery shop. The memorial ship struck bad weather and had to turn around briefly. A sick passenger was flown to an Irish hospital. Coming up - authorities brace themselves. is starting all overagain? To our region yesterday, region yesterday,: Time for sport. Here's Beretts. If Ben Te'o's found guilty of that, that means the shoulder-charge tackle, in any shape or form, is no longer part of our game. Brisbane's defence will be based around a similar hit from Bulldog Frank Pritchard which only resulted in a 1-week ban. Collingwood captain Nick Maxwell will make his return from an ankle injury in Friday night's showdown with Carlton at the MCG. Maxwell's return has been offset by the loss of fellow defender Chris Tarrant for at least a month with a calf problem. And Port Adelaide forward Robbie Gray has been cleared to take on the Swans this weekend after overcoming a hamstring injury. Two Australians have been nominated for world surfing's booby prize, the Billabong Wipeout of the Year Award. Mark Mathews is a contender for his effort off the West Australian coast and Tassie local Danny Griffith was nominated for a wipe-out at Shipsterns Bluff. Kurrawa has claimed the lives of three young life savers including 14-year-old Matthew Barclay last month. The competition will now take place at another venue in the region. Sunrise correspondent Michelle Tapper is on the Gold Coast. Michelle, what has Surf Life Saving said about the move? Good morning, Mel, well, CEO Brett Williamson said the decision to move the competition has been made out of respect for the three young lives lost. As well as the emotional safety of the entire surf life saving community who have been deeply affected by these 3 tragedies. It is three weeks today since 14-year-old Matt Barclay drowned at the event, the third life lost in 16 years. There is no lost in 16 years. There is no doubt Surf Lifesaving Australia has been in crisis since that time. There has been a lot of criticism about safety measures of the event and Kurrawa Beach in general. Nowhere in the press release they sent out late last night was there any acknowledgement of guilt or mention of the fact that Kurrawa Beach is a very dangerous surf spot, even for aleth athletes. Since bird bur died two years ago, his parents have been very critical of Surf Lifesaving Australia and have wanted the competition moved. They have listened at this point. No new location has been aannounced but North Kirra is North Kirra is firming as the preferred spot. Let us know inif you hear confirmation. Thank you. There are major delays this morning for commuters between Geelong and Melbourne. because of a signal fault. For more we're joined by Sunrise correspondent Nick Etchells. Nick, this is more pain for those who had trouble getting home last night? This is such a busy commuting route. It has been off line since 1:00 yesterday. The problem, as you say, is a 500 metre stretch of signal line. That has been faulty. It is 25 years old. And Victoria's aging train infrastructure strikes again. They are currently working on fixing that. But in the meantime, there are eighty buses ferrying people from Geelong to Melbourne. The problem is, the buses, a long car trip and a very direct train trip. In a bus, they have to stop at every they have to stop at every station. What was an hour train trip will take upwards of two hours. They expect people who normally catch the train will take the car today. All that traffic and buses go over the one bridge, the West Gate Bridge, it will be very ugly coming in from Geelong. Thankfully, it is school holidays and a short week, hopefully it eases things. Any ideas when trains are expected to be running again As I say, they are fixing the problem but they think about 11:00 this morning trains will be back on line, so if you can, wait. Keep us posted if that time changes, thanks, Nick. Cheers. A cold snap across south-eastern Australia has brought an early start to winter. In parts of Victoria, temperatures have dropped from 35 degrees to lows of just 3 degrees in a matter of days. The first snow of the year has also fallen in the Victorian Alps and New South Wales Snowy Mountains as temperatures dipped below zero. There's been snow in parts of Tasmania and the ACT, too. And it wasn't much better in Sydney, with the Harbour City shivering through its coldest April day in four years. So is this a sign of a long, cold winter ahead? Senior meteorologist Tom Saunders joins us from The Weather Channel. Good morning. What's caused this cold snap? Good morning, Nat. We had a strong cold front crossing south eastern Australia on Mondays. Behind that front air has surged north from in the Southern Ocean, so front air has surged north from deep temperatures dropping as much as 10 degrees below average. Most of the country through the east has seen the coldest weather so far. A lot of the country had a pretty mild summer. Does it mean we will have a long, cold winter? That is the good news. A cold spell in early autumn is snow no-indication winter will be cold. We expect temperatures in many parts of Australia to be warmer than normal, particularly eastern Australia. What does the winter look like? It is too early to make a call on winter but the good news, it is normal to have cold spells ofert weather in April. Every April for the last few years we have had a periods of alpine snowfall. Temperatures should be close to normal. There is no need to panic at this stage. Thank you. It's a big day at Brekky Central. We're counting down to One Direction's arrival. Sunrise correspondent Edwina Bartholomew is with fans in the plaza. Eddy, can you move out there? Can you hear out there? I can barely hear you, Kochie, I have got this things turned up to the highest level. In tournaments of moving, I can move here. The police have asked us not to go near the front of that in case it causes a crowd crush. They estimate around 2,000 people are here already, they have prepared for around 4,000, so certainly a lot of contingency measures in place to keep things very safe. Everyone is very well behaved so far. But some of the girls at the front are of the girls at the front are tired. They have been here overnight and still an hour to go. I met a mum and a daughter this time yesterday got the train from Bathurst or a daughter this time yesterday who Lithgow? I I have met fans from Brisbane to see One Direction. They have come a very long way and been waiting a long time and just to hear what they have got to say. This is not a performance, just a chat. But they will take anything they can get. Getting close enough through the window would be enough for these fans, I think. OK, Eddy, we will check with you later. Police are appealing for calm ahead of the band's arrival. Superintendent Garry O'Dell is overseeing security operations and he joins us now. What sort of preparations go into an event like this? Certainly the crush of the young girls at the front. We are worried about some of them. There is not much room up there. We want everyone to not push forward. How many police have you got here? They are all lined along the window. Doing a great job. They are joke wg the kids, they are getting into the spirit, -- they are joking with the kids? They have been noisy and? Screaming. Wi have given earplugs if they need them. We have got 30 police in total and a few in support in other areas. At this age, who were you following? Monkees or Beatles? I Beatles? I was always a Beatles fan. Thank you for your help, big message for the girls, don't move forward. And on the roads, pay attention, there is traffic around the area, so pay attention on the roadways. A big thank you to all the mums and dads at the back who have brought all the kids in. They do a great job. Good to see the to see the parents staying with them overnight as well. Thank you, Kochie, it is a lot of fun. Now to the latest trend in weight loss. People are being offered cash to shed kilos. And if you stick to the plan it can really pay off. Healthywage.com believes the best way to lose weight is to bet you can do it. Here, dieters can gamble their way into better shape. We pay you money to lose weight. The American website offers three different diet programs. For this one though, members pay $100 to participate. If they lose 10% of their body weight over 6 months they win $200. These women are part of a team challenge, where groups of five compete to win thousands. Each member of the team pays $60 and the grand prize for the team with the highest percentage of weight loss, over three months, $10,000 to split between the team. Members have to verify their weight at a health club like Weight Watchers at the start and finish. We want to be the biggest winners, by being the biggest losers. Over $430,000 has already been given away. I don't care about the money, I just want to lose the weight. The site says it's financially supported by insurers, health systems, food companies and the US government. Sport psychologist Gavin Freeman joins me now. Do you think money is a good motivation for people wanting to lose weight? Well, look, we all do need motivation and we get motivated in different ways. Sometimes we need something to get over the line. Let's be honest, money is not a bad incentive for allf us. Whether it is going to last for the long term, I am not really sure but you got to get started. Once you get started and into the habit of doing things differently you can start to look within for more motivation and not rely on the cash. After people have lost the initial weight and banked the cheque, etc. the cheque, etc., etc. the cheque, etc., etc., how do they find it within themselves to keep it off? There is a bunch of different heard tools overcome. Some it is a cognitive hurdle, a thought process, we need to change the way we think. For others, a resource hurdle. We might not have enough time or money to pay for baby sitting. For others, a political hurdle, the environment, the culture that we live in. There might be the comfort food we eat because it is the way we do things in our household and qee have to overcome that. And others, a deep motivational issue to drive us to maintain the behaviour differently. For all For all of us, it will be a different hurdle. We have find out and put in play a bunch of mitigating strategies when we start to fall off. If you are like me and hidden all the Easter eggs from yourself in the house, it is a start. Pleasure. Commuters are facing major delays this morning between Geelong and Melbourne following yesterday's signal fault. 80 buses will take passengers between Warrnambool and Melbourne after a technical failure stopped V-Line services. Passengers are frustrated. Just as we were about to head off we all got pulled off and whacked on the buses which ended up with about an hour delay. A V-Line spokesman said the fault is believed to be linked to underground cable problems which caused chaos on the line last week. Surf Life Saving Australia will move next year's national championships It says the change of location is necessary following the deaths of Robert Gatenby, Saxon Bird and, most recently, 14-year-old Matthew Barclay.
