How beautiful to be in Byron Bay

One of my favourites parts of

Australia, if not the world. It is

just magnificent. The lighthouse is

up there. As you know, that's the

most easterly point of New South

Wales. You have always got a few

people hanging out down the beach.

People getting fit and healthy, is your People getting fit and healthy, surf

skis. So much to do in Byron. Have a

look at this vision. We were up here

recently. You can go up to the

lighthouse. You can zone out, get a

bit of perspective. You can do some

whale watching. So much wildlife

around here. There is scuba diving,

deep fea fishing. You can go dirt

biking. So much to see and do. With

school holidays just around the

correspond necessity, Byron Bay is a

sensational place, it's a great

place to bring the kids, to come as

a couple, for a boys' trip or a

a couple, for a boys' trip or a trip with the girls. Let's have a look at

the forecars, is it still some

fairly severe weather around. Let's

look around Australia. look around Australia.. On the regional fly-around - A shower or two and 33 degrees in Cairns. 32 in Townsville. A muggy 34 degrees in Mount Isa. While more rain is expected in Brisbane with a top of 31 degrees. In New South Wales, rain developing in Coffs Harbour. Cloudy and 17 in Orange. An overcast day in Sydney. Windy and 21 in Canberra. And a shower or two expected in Albury. Sunny and 25 in Mildura today. A few showers and 21 expected for Bendigo. Rain clearing in Melbourne and 21. Launceston can expect a shower or two and 19 degrees. And it's going to be a damp day in Hobart with only 18 degrees. A mainly fine day for Adelaide and 22 degrees. 19 in Mount Gambier. Storms and 32 for Alice Springs. Monsoonal showers for Darwin. And in Western Australia, partly cloudy and 23 in Kalgoorlie.

Sunny skies and 31 for Perth. While Broome can expect a few showers and 32 degrees.

Now, look, school holidays are here

and it is a perfect reminder to take

a break. Whether you've got school

kids or not, it's very important to

have a little bit of a R and R from

your body and I will tell you what,

Byron Bay is one of the best places

to do it. I am sure you guys have been up here.

Alright, Martin, thank you for

It comes after a fishing boat carrying as many as 100 asylum seekers smashed on Wednesday morning in high seas. For more on the latest developments we're joined by Seven reporter David Cooper. Good morning, David. What's the latest update on the Christmas Island protest?

Good morning, Sam, it appears at

this stage that the situation has

calm down here. We need to clarify

that the protests didn't happen at

the main detention camp on the

south-eastern side of the island. It

actually happened near the

settlement. That's a construction

camp that was originally built for

workers but because the main

detention centre has been so over

crowded for so long, authorities are

putting detainees in this other camp

and yesterday, basically tensions

flaired. We know that we say dozens

of protestors stormed the protest,

test, holding up signs, demanding

representation by the union. At one

stage, you are seeing in our

pictures, the detainers bust through

the front gate and started a march,

a female worker was excellently

knocked on the ground. At this

stage, it's pitch black over here,

the situation seems to be under

control. Who knows what will happen

today. There has been a lot of tension over here.

David, I understand authorities are

closing in on the people smuggler

who was operating that doomed boat.

When will they make an arrest, do

you know?

Well, that's anybody's guess. I mean, the Prime Minister Julia

Gillard, came out yesterday, all she

would say when it came to the hunt

of these people smuggler was that

the investigation was investigating.

There are more than 30 extra police

here on Christmas island, among

those Homicide detectives

those Homicide detectives from Western Australia, they have been

seconded to the Australian federal

police. They have spent several days

now speaking to some of the survivor

who have been held inside detention.

Many of those people are cooperating

to the point where the 3 Indonesia

crewmen onboard, now have to be

isolated inside the detention centre for their own safety.

Is there any hope, of finding any

more survivor or is this it?

Well, a decision will be made or

whether or not police divers resume

their search today. Of course, this

will now be day 3 at least. We know

that they did originally find two

bodies on the second day, a body of

a man and a child, it has been a

while since then, we are expecting a

decision this morning on whether or

not ta recovery mission continues.

OK. David Cooper on Christmas

island. Thank you for bringing us up to date. Thank you.

Damaging winds on the Central Coast.

Heavy rain is causing flooding in

the Sunshine State. Hail battered

the south-east corner of Queensland,

the Weather Bureau is expecting more

Look, there is further rain on the

of rain and thunderstorm activity

corner during the weekend. As you

mentioned, there has been a lot of

severe thunderstorm activity over

the last three days, in parts of

the last three days, in parts of the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane

itself. So that weather is expected

to continue across the weekend.

Talk us through the worst affected

areas in Queensland?

It has been around the Gold Coast,

the Sunshine Coast and the the Sunshine Coast and the Brisbane

area. On Thursday afternoon, we had

golf ball sized hail in just around

Brisbane area. We had strong winds

and we have also had busts of

flooding rains right through the

same area, the Gold Coast,

same area, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast for the last 3 days in a row, we

in a row, we are expecting more of

that, particularly this afternoon

and even more Thomas the rain ramps

up through the area.

What about New South Wales in the

days to come?

We are expecting quite a vigorous

cold front to move across Victoria

and New South Wales on Sunday. In

fact, we are even looking at Hyland

snow for Tasmania, Victoria and the

southern parts of New South Wales.

So quite a strong front. It will

drop temperatures, produce showers

and also become very windy

particularly during Sunday and Monday.

Very extreme stuff. Let's move to

the West Coast. How are they looking?

Police are out in force this weekend for the third Operation Unite, a crackdown on alcohol-related crimes. So was everyone on their best behaviour? I am joined by Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe from Victoria Police and from New South Wales Police, Assistant Commissioner Alan Clarke. Good morning. Deputy Commissioner Kieran, we'll start in Victoria. What was it like on the streets last night?

Sam, it was pretty busy out there

last night. There was a lot of

people out there. Ha h been a lot of

Christmas parties, some businesses

and construction workers had

finished for the year and they have

been celebrating so the streets were

quite busy. Our police were very busy.

Do you think Operation Unite is

having an impact?

Look, I think so. In the areas that

we focussed on last night, we only

had 126 arrests for drunksness which

I think is a reasonably good result

for the community themselves. You

know, the message has been really

about changing cult, changing

attitudes to drinking, drinking in

moderation, behaving in a

responsible manner so I think we are having an

having an impact. I think this is a

good opportunity for the

commissioners of Australia and New

Zealand to jointly put the message

out there that drunkedness and

street related violence and social

disorder is just not acceptable.

New South Wales, Assistant

Commissioner Clark, are you seeing

more people drinking over this

so-called silly season?

Absolutely. It's a well known

tradition. People will consume more

alcohol over Christmas, over the

holiday period. What we want them to

do is just consume that responsibly.

Drink sensibly, keep themselves

safe, make sensible decisions. We

had a similar night to Victoria, we

had a pretty busy night last night

and police were kept on their toes.

We are seeing some vision of that.

How many arrests were made. Are

those figures higher than last year?

We made 347 arrests last night.

That's a bit less than what we did

in September. We saw some reductions

in drink driving offences and drug

possession. But our alcohol related

assaults were fairly comparative.

Street offensive were comparative

we have got a road to Ho there Street offensive were comparative so still.

In New South Wales, rain developing in Coffs Harbour. Cloudy and 17 in Orange. An overcast day in Sydney. Windy and 21 in Canberra. And a shower or two expected in Albury. Coast and Sunshine Coast. The Weather Bureau predicts there will

be further rain activity across the

weekend in Queensland, New South

Wales and Western For more on the extreme weather, we're joined by Dick Whitaker from the Weather Channel. Good morning. Are South-East Queensland residents in for more wild weather? Australia.

Yes, good morning, Sam.

Unfortunately we think that is the

case. We have had 3 days in a row

where we have had quite severe

thunderstorm activity across the

area. That seems to be once again on

the cards today. Also tomorrow and

even tomorrow conditions may even

tend to ramp up a little bit more.

Tell us which areas in Queensland are worst affected

Well basically the last 3 days, Sam,

we have seen thunderstorm activity

across the Gold Coast, the Sunshine

Coast and Brisbane itself. On

Thursday afternoon, we saw golf ball

size the hail at Logie and city.

That was representative of what has

been happening across the area for

the last 3 afternoons and with

thunderstorms again expected today

and tomorrow, that could repeat itself.

OK, New South Wales, are we expected

to receive more rainfall.

Yes, quite a major cold front expected across Victoria

expected across Victoria and New South Wales tomorrow and even

possible snow falls for those areas.

It's quite a cold outbreak for this

time of the year. That's going to

generate rain and also quite windy

conditions, particularly during Sunday and Monday.

Snow in December, it really is

crazy, let's move to the West Coast

now, are they in for more rain?

Yes, looking at the satellite

photograph. We can see a large band

of cloud right across the continent.

That's associate with a jet stream.

But there is a very large tropical

low on the West Coast. And a lot of

rain and thunderstorms expected

there. Canarvon has seen more than

200 mm in the last 24 hours.

Is this weather expected to stick

around for Christmas, Dick.

Well, we think the capital cities

most likely to be affected by rain

for Christmas Day in order would be

Darwin, Brisbane and then Sydney.

OK, Dick, thank you very much for

your time. We will talk to you soon. Thank you, Sam. It's official. 'The King has left the building'. Broadcaster Larry King signed off after 25 years hosting his self-titled CNN chat show. For more, we're joined by US correspondent Angela Cox. Yes, good morning. It's definitely the end of an era. Larry King interviewed every US president since the mid 70s and pretty much every celebrity worth talking to. He was nervous about his final show, with producers promising a few surprises for the audience and the man himself. Good evening and welcome to the last Larry King Alive. It's hard to say that. I knew this day was coming. These words are not easy to say. Bill Maher is the host - is the host of Bill Maher on HBO, that's Larry King go right to it. In true Larry King style, not a moment was wasted.

The surprises came rolling in thick and fast. So my announcement is the day in California is officially Larry King Day so congratulations to 25 years of great broadcasting and great, great entertainment and a great friendship. Thank you very much. From old friends... We want you to know, we've got you the official Larry King suspenders and on the back we've got your back, our names engraved on it. To the highest office... ..you say that all you do is ask questions but for generations of Americans the answers to those questions have surprised us, they've informed us and they've opened our eyes to the world beyond our living rooms, so thank you Larry and best of luck. It was a fitting farewell for the 'King' of television. He's clocked up 50,000 interviews over the years but now the 77-year-old is his hanging up his suspenders. And what a ride it has been. When you hear and read all the reports the police say you didn't, how do you react to that? The purpose of jail is to teach you something. Did it teach you something? Definitely. It was a very traumatic experience

but I think God makes everything happen for a reason. Larry King goes straight to the source to get the news. I was standing in the middle of the room with the baby like a mother protecting her cubs as Mel proceeded to walk into the room and... ..struck you? And struck me twice in front of my boy twice. Was he drunk? No, he wasn't. No sign of conscious at all, John? Larry, in my heart I think he was dead, dead. (cries) I'm sorry, I don't think he was alive. And as the spotlight fades on 'The Larry King Show' his legacy will shine on in broadcast history. Larry King will make a quick appearance on the Tonight Show on Monday and then take a well-deserved break from the small screen. He's planning a holiday to Utah with his wife and their two boys.

Thank you, Ange, why wouldn't he

come to Australia and do a show from the Opera House.

Can we take any more shows. We need a little break

A little holiday for us too. Smear campaign.. Is Julian Assange's reputation being sabotaged? Plus
