A standoff after a tense meeting between John Howard and the man who wants his job, Peter Costello. Both agree a smooth transition is in the Government's best interests but no timetable has been agreed. High alert at John Howard's Sydney office this morning. It wasn't the approaching Treasurer but a suspicious parcel that forced the car park closed and the fire department called in. We're having some important discussions about policy matters and there's a lot of work to be done and I'll be working very hard. The Prime Minister says the meeting was to finetune the Budget. Liberal MPs would be flabbergasted if the two men didn't also discuss the leadership. Mr Howard in a series of radio interviews drove home the message his thwarting of Mr Costello last time proved right. I would never have stayed on to fight the last election if the party hadn't wanted me to and I have to say the judgement of the party then and my decision was correct. But this time those close to the Treasurer say

Mr Howard will have a fight on his hands unless a retirment date is set. Others hoping a showdown will be avoided. I'm sure they'll resolve these matters between themselves. Mr Howard's closest allies simply don't believe Peter Costello will mount a challenge. You're putting something to me which I think is very, very, very unlikely to happen. The PM and his Treasurer discussed the leadership without advisers present. It was aimable according to the Howard office, tense according to other sources. The Treasurer told the PM an orderly transition before the next election was in the best interests of the party. It's that time table that John Howard finds completely unacceptable. Mr Costello now appears to have a steely determination. Is there a chance that you might drop out of the game altogether if you don't get handed the leadership before the next election? There seems to be some concern that that may happen. No. Paul Bongiorno, Ten News. And Paul Bongiorno joins us now from Canberra. Paul, how can this stand-off be resolved?

It's believed the man was set upon by two pitbull terriers

who escaped their backyard just before 6am. A neighbour raising the alarm after the man was dragged across the street by one of the dogs. Ambulance officers arrived to find him bleeding heavily from bites to his arms and legs. The dogs are now being cared for while police try to contact the owners. Building workers took their anger to the streets today, demanding changes to personal injury laws. They claim prisoners injured in jail have more rights than workers hurt on the job. They marched into a parliamentary inquiry - building workers injured on the job. Victims, they say, of changes to the personal injury laws. And their union boss was pulling no punches.

You've passed laws that have meant misery

for working people in NSW. Under the changes, workers can't sue negligent bosses unless they suffer disability to at least 15% of their body, and that's a threshold, the union says, that does not even apply to prisoners. 28-year-old father of three Daniel Reeves was injured in an accident this year

when a concrete plank collapsed, decapitating a fellow worker. He can't sue, nor can he forget. Still think of it now. Right now while I'm talking to you. So it makes it very hard. Injured building workers say they can't survive on workers compensation payouts. I'm now reduced to just having a payout of, like, $185 in the hand a week. I find it very hard to live on. While the building workers were demanding change, the Government was announcing it's moving to cancel the licences of 80 shonky home builders. There'll also be a major review of the licensing system and home-building laws. There are shonky builders out there who are prepared to prey on individual consumers. Details of the cancelled licences will be progressively made available on the Fair Trading website. Paul Mullins, Ten News. It's believed the 28-year-old was talking to three men on the front step of his Rosewood Drive home late yesterday when an argument broke out. Witnesses say the man then locked himself inside, but a shot was fired through the door, hitting him in the upper thigh. He's now in a stable condition at Liverpool Hospital. And a man was rushed to St Vincent's Hospital early this morning after falling from the roof of a second-storey building in Potts Point. The 23-year-old suffered severe chest and back injuries. It's not yet known why the man was on the roof of the terrace, but it's thought he was conducting repair work. A solicitor and a mortgage broker are among the latest suspects arrested over Sydney's most brazen property scam. Five more men were taken into custody accused of conspiring to defraud a Sydney bank of more than $2 million in home loans. Police say fake identities were used to secure home loans that were not repaid when the properties were resold for enormous profits. 18 people have now been charged with taking part in the elaborate scheme.

A Sydney teenager serving a 30-year suspension for allegedly bashing a touch judge has today faced court on assault charges. The 15-year-old, who's too young to be identified, is accused of attacking touch judge Shane Merry, who'd disallowed a crucial try. The 21-year-old official was left on crutches as a result of the incident. The teenager was banned from rugby league for 30 years but claims he never threw a punch. Today he pleaded not guilty to two assault charges. He'll face Campbelltown Children's Court again later this month. An eye-catching start to the 10th annual Australian Fashion Week in spite of the controversies and a few no-shows. Some designers drew inspiration from the past while one abandoned the catwalk altogether. What a way to kick-start the week. Australian designer Lisa Ho getting in early and stealing the show with her latest summer collection inspired by women of the '70s. Big hair was the order of the day, but it didn't detract from her masterpieces of exotic scarf prints and splashes of vibrant colour. It was really about lots of beautiful patterns and animal skins and mixing them together with a rich colour pallet. One of her stunning creations was worn by Bec Cartwright at last night's Logies. Today's A-list crowd even included Aussie actress Sarah Wynter. I haven't seen a Lisa Ho show in five years even though I always wear her clothes, so I'm really excited. Akira Isogawa abandoned the catwalk and showed off his couture-like creations with the help of dancers from the production 'Grand' - backed up, of course, by a grand piano. I use silk and lightweight fabric, so I thought, "When dancer moves, the fabric moves as well, beautifully." This stunning gown was made from 60m of silk georgette and took seven days to sew. Despite a number of top designers deciding to pull out of this year's Fashion Week, international buyers aren't likely to be disappointed with some of the talent on offer. Rising to the challenge, brother and sister team Camilla and Marc are proof the times are a changing -

perhaps now it's time to ditch those hipsters, girls.

And there's plenty more fashion action to come,

with another 37 shows lined up for the rest of the week. Ebbeny Faranda, Ten News.

roam freely about the house. A Queensland native scrub python is believed to have squeezed the life from Erik Attmarsson. The 28-year-old's body found in his Tanunda home yesterday afternoon. There was only one snake that was in the same room as the deceased and that was the python. Born in Sweden, he was the curator at a nearby laboratory, home to hundreds of reptiles milked for anti-venoms. He also kept pet pythons. It's believed and known in the area that he had snakes that he let roam around the house. Mr Attmarsson's body was found by his employer Peter Mirtsch

from Tanunda-based Venom Supplies. He said he and his colleagues were too distraught to speak on camera today and took the unusual step of hiring a security firm to keep people away. Police would not confirm reports the victim had consumed a large amount of alcohol before his death, or whether marks on his face were consistent with being crushed by a snake. Two uncaged pythons were retrieved from his home and taken to Monarto Zoo. Reptile suppliers say the snakes should not be handled alone. Well, they're quite strong.

Out in the wild up in North Queensland they will pull down a small feral pig or a small wallaby. Neighbours described Mr Attmarsson as a kind man who kept to himself, often heard playing loud music at night - still trying to come to terms with the grisly find. Not in a little rural spot like this. We're still trying to get over it really. Belinda Heggen, Ten News. A dramatic mid-air escape for tourists left dangling mid-air after a cable car malfunction. 24 people were stranded for around four hours after a power failure brought their sightseeing tour to an abrupt halt. While technicians struggled to get things moving, this was the fastest way to get them out. But some of the people who took the leap are furious police took so long to respond. A new device is set to make life much easier for young asthmatics. The Funhaler ensures kids are using their medication effectively. Taking your medicine doesn't usually prompt these responses. (Inhaler whistles comically) It might be a laugh, but the new Funhaler is concerned with some serious business - the tough time many parents have getting asthmatic kids to inhale their medication effectively. So the parent delivers the medication into the chamber

and then the child just plays with the device and breathes in the medication. Now inhaling becomes a game, both encouraging the use of the inhaling spacers and ensuring the child is doing it properly. Any improvement that we can get in the overall management and the confidence the parents can have that this is going to help their child through the day is really sorely looked-after.

No complaints from the kids. It's a lot better, to make sure that kids are taking their medication because sometimes I've had to have heaps of medication and it never helps. With one in six Australian children living with the condition, the Asthma Foundation believes the invention could take off. From time to time kids don't like the medication, tehy don't like the devices, it's another thing they have to do. This kind of device will assist them to do that and to better manage their asthma. Already the company behind the invention is fielding interest from across the world. That's much better. Max Futcher, Ten News. Virgin Blue and Qantas have promised to include all surcharges and taxes when promoting prices of their flights from next week. Travellers have been lobbying the carriers for the change, and last week the Federal Government said it would change the law to ensure the total cost was advertised. She's taught her pet cat to use the home toilet, saying goodbye to the litter tray forever. He looks like a regular 6-month-old Burmese, but when nature calls, young Doogal is far from normal. He's been trained to use a toilet because his owner was fed up with kitty litter. I was really regretting the whole litter tray business. It had been eight years since I had a cat in the house, and I love cats but I hate the litter. Jo Lapidge then saw the movie 'Meet The Parents'. Oh, sorry. So with no previous experience, the mother of two created the Litter Kwitter. It's a litter tray that fits on the toilet seat. Once Doogal accepted it, a new tray with a small hole was introduced,

then another tray with an even bigger hole. Here's Doogal in the training phase when he was still learning his way around the loo. Now he's the master of his domain, using a standard toilet seat. He was pretty well trained within two weeks but we're saying, roughly speaking, about eight weeks to train a cat.

The Litter Kwitter has now received a Federal Government grant, even though it could cause gridlock at the bathroom door. Righto, Doogal, righto. Give me a minute. Now, some might say the queue for the toilet is already long enough, but once your cat's fully trained, you should never have to touch the kitty litter again. Vets say that creates a more hygienic house and there's thousands of other cats who can do the same. Given the right circumstances and the right cat it should be able to work very well. For more information go to www.litterkwitter.com. Dan Nolan, Ten News. Sport with Tim Webster and the league judiciary jumps on Billy Slater. Yes. He's been charged with a head slam. More shortly.
