Well, I work mainly with film and video and video installation for the most part and I guess the reason that more than traditional cinema or theatre or anything else with my practice, anyway, is just the inherent freedom that it gives me - video art. I'm not necessarily answering to producers or working with big crews or worrying about money. So that alone gives me an inherent freedom with the work and I kind of like that, and that's a very do-it-yourself angle. and it's kind of an investigation in my interest in meshing the idea of American folk music and musicianship. (Yells) Someday, you won't get there, Way over in the Promised Land. TV Moore definitely comes from that MTV generation where he'll take a whole lot of material from a broad range of places and recontextualise it within his work. I've got this character, a friend of mine, who acts, does this beautiful, satirical John Howard

so I've got this lost John Howard sequence that I'm shooting in the bush. When I say "Action". Put your head straight out, okay? Action, Tom. That's good. Hold that. There's just so much wonderful stuff and there's just... it just would have been too simple and easy just to go ahead with one simple idea. So I'm bringing together 20 different things. And, you know, it could be a complete mess. And I'm gonna be really happy with that. But we'll see, it's been a fun ride, you know. So...we'll see. I would get up in the morning - day one - I would set up the canvas, start marking the drawing out and generally start it and develop a mindset as I'm going. And the big challenge and what is most draining is maintaining that mindset. What we'll be doing today is going through an abbreviated version

of the tour of the TV studios, predominantly and a little bit of a rundown of radio and what's incorporated within this building. When the ABC project came up, firstly there were two things - Four Corners and Play School - I thought all the news and current affairs stories. I started thinking almost immediately about Palm Island and Wave Hill and different events like the Bicentennial march in Sydney

and other events that have happened. Big Ted? Does somebody want to hold Big Ted?

And I thought of that straightaway

and also of doing something about the Play School toys. Here's Henny Penny. Yeah, pass them around. And Humpty. Humpty! We had a tour of the studios. We went down into the Play School workshop where they put all the activities and craft things together and they had the toys there, and they put them out on the table, and they said, "You know, they need hugs." "You can pick them up because they're meant to be hugged." 'Cause they all need cuddles. And there's that whole thing that toys have a life when you switch the light off and leave the room. The primary reference for these are a couple of museum photos taken on Palm Island in 1938. So there's this very sort of intense gaze in them. So I wanted to apply that gaze to other people in my family, to the men in my family. The group of images is a triptych that uses two images of my great grandfather, George Sibley, with an image of my son, Michael. And this was to establish that continuity, that link.

Look, there's a penny farthing bicycle. That's one of the very first bicycles that were ever invented. But Play School means a lot to me. Growing up in north Queensland when I was a child, we only had two channels. There was the local TV and there was ABC. Hang on. You right? Yes. I have very fond and vivid memories of watching Play School when I was very small. We watched a couple of very, very early episodes, and it was just a strange sensation, really. Somehow I don't think a bike like that would work at the campgrounds. It was in black and white and we're used to seeing everything in colour now. But, um, just the format is familiar. The opening is familiar. The song is still the same and, um, the shot always opens up on the presenters with a couple of toys or something else.

SONG: # And stories to tell # Open wide # Come inside # It's Play School. # Well, Humpty is expressive. He's the first one I'm doing. He has particular resonance with me because I... When I was very small I used to spend a lot of time with my grandmother in Innisfail, and she used to sew and make toys all the time and she used to make Humptys, and because I had drawing skills very early on she would make the Humptys, different-sized Humptys, and I would draw the faces. There would be a few Humptys in north Queensland with faces I've drawn that are owned by people. Yes, so Humpty is particularly significant. SWING MUSIC (Lorrae Desmond sings) # I used to think that marriage

# Was boring # The very thought of it filled me with dread... # We were very much interested in looking at the entertainment kind of area of the ABC, and through that we looked at a whole lot of shows on the ABC and we were very much attracted to Lorrae Desmond. The thing that struck us as well as her lovely look and wig, etc, was her gestures. You know, she's straight forward, then suddenly her head's on an angle and it took us a little while to work out why that was, and it's because she has a second camera that she has to do close-ups into. # And do it, get married # When orange blossoms kiss the bough... # And it was really nice, this awkwardness of the live and I think that's what we're interested in, the awkward body, and awkward moments. # I did it. #

AUDIENCE HUBBUB The identity of the Fondue Set is slightly a kind of not neurotic, but nervous and attention-seeking personality amongst the three of us. I think that's the thing that we do a bit in our choreography is doing something for a little bit too long or getting a little bit stuck in some place

and then having to snap out of it. # When moles pop up from underground # And mooses make their famous sound # Do it # Get married... # So we could see the potential of what was already there, with what she created which was sort of a highly choreographed, quite specific positions that she was moving into for... we could see the potential of that and how we could play with that. # I did it # Got married. #

from people who often seem to be marginal in society, outsiders, so people that have often had a hard life,

people who look into society from the outside, people that are different. You find in Christopher Dean's painting that he has developed this really interesting kind of duplicitous practice where the actual painting style, it's almost like a revisiting of abstraction in our country. But the abstraction is always corrupted by the text that lurks underneath the painted pattern. "And She Calls Herself A Queen And She Hasn't Even Been to Club 80 "Plus I Was Into Hairy Uncut Men At The Time."

I've got a friend named Robert Lake and he has had an interesting life, worked for many years as a DJ in bars on Oxford Street like Patches and he also did the lighting and he comes out with some amazing quotes. "Drag Queens They Make Costumes Out of Nothing." "They Discarded The Dalects Uniforms And Came Out As John Travolta In Pink, Blue And Green." I immediately thought that I'd like to do something about children's television of the era I grew up in. I'm 42 now, so basically I started watching television when I was probably four or something like that. Hello, girls and boys. Hello, Mr House. Hello, Sue. How are you? How are you on this lovely Wednesday? I'm fine, and you?

So that would have been '67, and that was also the year that 'Adventure Island' started. (Groans) It was almost made in an amateur way as if the medium of television was still being defined or explored properly.

That's what really interested me, actually, that period when things were still in a state of flux and hadn't become controlled or regulated in the way that they are today. Hello! All of the scripts were written by John-Michael Howson and he actually played the role of the clown. And that for me was a great inspiration. (Sings) # It's time to say hello to you # Hello, hello, hello. # He's actually sent me several emails with quotations which I'll be using for the paintings, so there's a really nice link there between the person who wrote the scripts and these particular paintings. Yes, isn't it, a most peculiar thing? # A most peculiar thing... # The other thing that I like about it in relation to the concept of the pantomime is the high-camp aspect. And one of the characters in the program is called Flower Potts was actually a drag queen and was quite outrageous. # We only shrug and sing # It's a most peculiar, most peculiar, most peculiar thing. # OK, it's Christopher Dean having, I think you might say, a little obsession with 'Adventure Island'. But, guess what? There's heaps of other people who are mad about 'Adventure Island' as well.

And that is always what's great about good art, generally. The specific if it's done well, doesn't matter how wackily personal it is, it has an amazing kind of resonance out there.

(Sings) # But I don't care. # Oh. Oh. Ooh. Oh. There is this danger, of course, that it is possible for some of these young people to become compulsively idle. Where are you, you bugger? Where are you?

of the installation, TV MOORE: The logistics the archive to life, as opposed to just bringing actually worked out really well. together in an interesting fashion I think they all kind of come in a way, to the audience which is kind of challenging, but, for me, it worked out well. It's been hilarious I don't think you should stop them. of the drawing technique, I think it's because them immediately approachable. and because they're toys, it makes This is the first time, all together on the wall. walking in here and seeing them So it's exciting for me too.
