LEIGH SALES, PRESENTER: The Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon has welcomed plans by the United
States to increase its military commitment in Afghanistan.

On a visit to Washington, Mr Fitzgibbon criticised some NATO countries for not doing more for the
war effort in Afghanistan. But he says Australia will not increase its commitment.

JOEL FITZGIBBON, DEFENCE MINISTER: I know that there's a acknowledgement here that we are doing
very, very good work in Oruzgan Province. That we are doing as much as you could expect of us given
our capacity constraints.

LEIGH SALES: The Pentagon has also said a troop build-up would help stabilise Afghanistan.

The country's top military officer is expecting further troop reductions in Iraq, which will allow
the US to deploy more forces to Afghanistan.
