TONY JONES: A man suspected of murdering three people with an axe has been arrested after checking
into a motel in the western New South Wales town of Hay, some hours after his victims were
discovered.

Police were looking for 69-year-old John Walsh after three bodies, believed to be his wife and two
grandchildren, were found at a house in the central western town of Cowra. A local off-duty police
officer, believed to be his daughter, is in hospital after being wounded in the head during the
incident.

Walsh was arrested about 300 kilometres away in Hay after the owner of a motel tipped off police.
