Former guerilla leader Taur Matan Ruak has won East Timor's presidential election in a second-round
ballot against Francisco Guetterres.

EMMA ALBERICI, PRESENTER: A former guerrilla leader has won East Timor's presidential elections.

Taur Matan Ruak won Sunday's second round ballot against another hero of the independence struggle,
Francisco Guterres, the Fretilin candidate.

Ruak's platform includes looking after veterans and those who lost family during the independence
struggle, and he suggested universal military service as one solution to the problem of East
Timor's high youth unemployment.

The incumbent president, Jose Ramos Horta, was knocked out in the first round last month.
