VOTES AND PROCEEDINGS
OF THE
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
WEDNESDAY, 25TH SEPTEMBER, 1901.
1. The House met pursuant to adjournment.-Mr. Speaker took the Chair, and read Prayers.
2. RETURN TO WRIT.-Mr. Speaker announced that he had received a return to the Writ he had issued for the election of a Member to serve for the Electoral Division of Darling Downs, in the State of Queensland, in the place of the Honorable W. H. Groom, deceased, by which it appeared that Littleton Ernest Groom had been duly elected in pursuance of the said Writ.
3. MEMBER SwoRN.-Littleton Ernest Groom, Esquire, was then introduced, and made and subscribed the oath required by law.
4. PAPERs.-Sir William Lyne presented, by command of His Excellency the Governor-General-Return of Votes polled at the Election, Darling Downs Division, Queensland, held upon the 14th September, 1901.
The following Papers were laid upon the Table by the Clerk:-Men and Women Voters in South Australia and Western Australia.-Return to an Order of the House, dated 7th June, 1901. Aliens in Queensland.-Return to an Order of the House, dated 21st June, 1901. Commonwealth Officers not Transferred from State Service.-Return to an Order of the
House, dated 24th July, 1901.
Severally ordered to lie on the Table.
5. POST AND TELEGRAPH BILL.-The Order of the Day for the consideration of the Reports from the Committee of the whole House on this Bill having been read-Mr. Deakin moved, That the Reports be now adopted. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative. Ordered-That the third reading be made an Order of the Day for to-morrow.
6. EXCISE BILL.-The Order of the Day for the consideration of the Report from the Committee of the whole House on this Bill having been read-Mr. Kingston moved, That the Report be now adopted. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative. On the motion of Mr. Kingston, the House ordered that the Standing Orders be suspended so as to
allow the third reading to be moved this day. Bill, on the motion of Mr. Kingston, read a third time.

7. IMMIGRATION RESTRICTION BILL.-The Order of the Day for the further consideration of this Bill in Committee of the whole House having been read-Mr. Speaker left the Chair, and the House resolved itself into a Committee of the Whole. Mr. Speaker resumed the Chair; Mr. Chanter reported that the Committee had made progress in
the Bill, and that he was directed to ask, That the Committee may have leave to sit again. Resolved-That the House will, to-morrow, again resolve itself into the said Committee.
-8. ADJOURNMENT.-Mr. Barton moved, That the House do now adjourn.
Question-put and resolved in the affirmative.
And then the House, at thirty-eight minutes past ten o'clock p.m., adjourned until to-morrow, at half-past two o'clock p.m.
