HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
FRIDAY, 9TH AUGUST, 1901.
1. The House met pursuant to adjournment.-Mr. Speaker took the Chair, and read Prayers.
2. PETITIONS.-Mr. Clarke presented a Petition from certain electors, citizens, and residents of the State of New South Wales, praying that the House will be pleased to eliminate clauses 54 and 55 of the Post and Telegraph Bill. Mr. Fuller presented a Petition from W. Henry Howard, John Nelson, and John E. Richardson,
styling themselves respectively vice-presidents and secretary of the Jamberoo Christian Endeavour Society in the State of New South Wales, in favour of the retention of clauses 54 and 55 of the Post and Telegraph Bill. Mr. E. Solomon presented a Petition from certain shipowners and shipping agents, carrying on operations in Western Australia, praying that the House will amend the Inter-State Commis-sion Bill so as to exclude those clauses which deal with sea carriage. Petitions severally received. SSir Malcolm McEacharn presented a Petition from certain electors, citizens, and residents of the
State of Victoria, praying that the House will be pleased to eliminate clauses 55 and 56 of the Post and Telegraph Bill. Sir Malcolm McEacharn moved, That the Petition be received. Debate ensued. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative. Sir Malcolm McEacharn moved, That the Petition be read. Question-put and negatived.
3. ExcisE ON BEER BILL.-The Order of the Day for the consideration of the further Report from the Committee of the whole House on this Bill having been read-Mr. Kingston moved, That the Report be now adopted. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative. Ordered-That the third reading be made an Order of the Day for Tuesday next.
4. DEFENCE BILL.-The Order of the Day for the resumption of the debate on the question, That thi: Bill be now read a second time, having been read-Debate resumed. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative.-Bill read a second time. Mr. Speaker left the Chair, and the House resolved itself into a Committee of the Whole. Mr. Speaker resumed the Chair; Mr. Salmon reported that the Committee had made progress in
the Bill, and that he was directed to ask, That the Committee may have leave to sit again. Resolved-That the House will, on Tuesday next, again resolve itself into the said Committee. 5. POST AND TELEGRAPH BILL.-The Order of the Day for the resumption of the debate on the question, That this Bill be now read a second time, having been read-
Debate resumed. Mr. Mahon moved, That the debate be now adjourned. QuestiOn-That'the debate be now adjourned-put and resolved in the affiriative. Ordered-That the resumption of the debate be made an Order of the Day for Tuesday next.

6. DISTILLATION BILL.-Mr. Kingston, pursuant to an Order of the House made on 2nd August instant, brought up a Bill intituled "A Bill relating to Distillation," and moved, That it be now read a first time. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative.-Bill read a first time.
Ordered-That the second reading be made an Order of the Day for Tuesday next.
7. ADJOURNMENT.-Mr. Barton moved, That the House do now adjourn. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative.
And then the House, at forty-six minutes past three o'clock p.m., adjourned until Tuesday next, [at half-past two o'clock p.m.
