FRIDAY, 2ND AUGUST, 1901.
1. The House met pursuant to adjournment.-Mr. Speaker took the Chair, and read Prayers.
2. PETITIONS.-Mr. Knox presented a Petition from the Religious Society of Friends (sometimes called Quakers) praying the House, in the event of the adoption of the principle of compulsory service, to provide an exempting conscience clause in the Defence Bill that will give relief to all whose religious convictions forbid their participating in warlike affairs, and also that if any oath be required an affirmation may be accepted instead, as is now allowed in legal and other proceedings.
Mr. R. Edwards presented a Petition from certain persons resident in Maryborough, in the State of Queensland, interested in the cultivation and sale of oysters, praying that such a duty may be placed upon oysters imported from beyond the Commonwealth as may enable the petitioners to compete upon terms of equality with the producers of such imported oysters. Petitions severally received and read.
3. PAPER.-Mr. Barton presented-Further Report of the Federal Military Committee assembled at Melbourne, Victoria, 12th June, 1901. Ordered to lie on the Table, and to be printed.
4. MESSAGE FROM THE SENATE-AUDIT BILL.-Mr. Speaker announced the receipt of the following Message from the Senate:-M?. SPEAKER, M1essage No. 13.
The Senate has agreed to the Bill intituled "An Act to make provision for the Collectzon and Payment of the Public Mloneys the Audit of the Public Accounts and the Protection and Recovery of Public Property and for other purposes," with the amendment indicated by the annexed Schedule, to which it desires the concurrence of the House of Representatives.

Schedule of the amendment made by the Senate:-In page 18, in clause No. 53, line 8, after the word " after" insert "the commencement of." Ordered-That the foregoing Message be taken into consideration forthwith in Committee of the whole House.
Mr. Speaker left the Chair, and the House resolved itself into a Committee of the Whole. Mr. Speaker resumed the Chair; Mr. Piess6 reported that the Committee had agreed to the amend-ment made by the Senate. - -
On the motion of Sir George Turner, the House adopted the Report.

5. NATIONAL SYSTEM OF OLD-AGE PENSIONS.-Mr. O'Malley moved, pursuant to notice, That, in the opinion of this House, it is desirable, in the interests of the deserving aged poor, that the Govern-ment should, without unnecessary delay, formulate a National scheme for the payment of old-age pensions, and that this motion, when carried, be an instruction to the Honorable the Attorney-General'to draft the necessary measure. Debate ensued. Sir William Lyne moved, as an amendment, That the words " without unnecessary delay" in line 3
be omitted, with a view to insert in the place thereof the words " as soon as the financial position of the Commonwealth justifies such action." Debate continued. Mr. Willis moved, That the debate be now adjourned. Question-That the debate be now adjourned-put. The House divided-

,6. MESSAGE FROM THE SENATE-STATE LAWS AND RECORDS RECOGNITION BILL.-Mr. Speaker announced the receipt of the following Message from the Senate :

The Senate has agreed to the amendments made by the House of Representatives in the' Bill intituled "An Act to provide for the recognition throughout the Commonwealth of the Laws, the Public Acts and Records, and the Judicial Proceedings of the States." R. C. BAKER,

7. DISTILLATION BILL.-Ai]r. Kingston moved, pursuant to notice, That leave be given to bring in a Bill relating to Distillation. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative. Ordered-That Mr. Kingston do prepare and bring in the Bill.
8. EXCISE BILL.-Mr. Kingston moved, pursuant to notice, That leave be given to bring in a Bill relating to Excise. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative. Ordered-That Mr. Kingston do prepare and bring in the Bill.
9. ADJOURNMENT.-Mr. Barton moved, That the House do now adjourn. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative.
And then the House, at sixteen minutes past four o'clock p.m., adjourned until Tuesday next at half-past two o'clock p.m.
