VOTES AND PROCEEDINGS
OF THE
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
THURSDAY, 1sT AUGUST, 1901.
1. The House met pursuant to adjournment.-Mr. Speaker took the Chair, and read Prayers.
2. PAPER.-Mr. Barton presented-Commonwealth and State Salaries.-Comparative Statement showing salaries paid under the Commonwealth, and in the States of New South Wales and Victoria, and statement of living allowances paid under the Commonwealth. Ordered to lie on the Table and to be printed.
3. ADJOURNMENT-MOTION FOR PURPOSE OF DISCUSSION.-Mr. Fuller rose in his place, and said that he proposed to move the adjournment of the House for the purpose of discussing a definite matter of urgent public importance, namely "The extraordinary expenditure of the Government in con-nexion with the Commonwealth Service." Mr. Speaker thereupon called upon those Members who approved of the proposed discussion to rise
in their places, and five Members having accordingly risen-Mr. Fuller moved, That the House do now adjourn. Debate ensued. Question-put and negatived.
4. ExcISE ON BEER BILL.-The Order of the Day for the consideration of the Report from the Com mittee of the whole House on His Excellency the Governor-General's Message No. 13, having been read-Mr. Salmon reported from the Committee a certain resolution, which was read, and is as follows:-
Resolved-That it is expedient that an appropriation be made from the Consolidated Revenue for the purposes of a Bill relating to Excise on Beer. And the said resolution was adopted by the House.
5. CUSTOMS BILL.-The Order of the Day for the third reading of this Bill having been read-Mr. Kingston moved, That this Bill be now read a third time. Debate ensued. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative.-Bill read a third time.
6. POSTPONEMENT OF ORDER OF THE DAY.- Ordered-That the consideration of Order of the Day No. 3 be postponed until to-morrow.
7. DEFENCE BILL.-The Order of the Day for the resumption of the debate on the question, That this Bill be now read a second time, having been read-Debate resumed. Mr. McDonald moved, That the debate be now adjourned. Question-That the debate be now adjourned-put and resolved in the affirmative. Ordered-That the resumption of the debate be made an Order of the Day for Tuesday next.

8. SERVICE AND EXECUTION OF PROCESS BILL.-The Order of the Day for the second reading of this Bill having been read-Mr. Barton moved, That this Bill be now read a second time. Sir John Quick moved, That the debate be now adjourned. And after debate, Question-That the debate be now adjourned-put and resolved in the affirmative. Ordered-That the resumption of the debate be made an Order of the Day for Tuesday next. 9. STANDING ORDERS COMMITTEE-POWER TO CONFER.-Mr. Barton moved, by leave, That the Standing
Orders Committee have power to confer with the Standing Orders Committee of the Senate with reference to the proposed new Standing Orders. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative.
10. ADJOURNMENT.-Mr. Barton moved, That the House do now adjourn. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative.
And then the House, at forty-eight minutes past nine o'clock p.m., adjourned until to-morrow at two o'clock p.m.
