THURSDAY, 25TH JULY, 1901..
1. The House met pursuant to adjournment.-Mr. Speaker took the Chair, and read Prayers.
2. ADJOURNMENT-MOTION FOR PURPOSE OF DISCUSSION.-Mr. Watson rose in his place, and said that he proposed to move the adjournment of the House for the purpose of discussing a definite matter of urgent public importance, namely "The increasing employment of coloured labour on subsidized mail steamers." Mr. Speaker thereupon called upon those Members who approved of the proposed discussion to rise.
in their places, and five Members having accordingly risen-Mr. Watson moved, That the House do now adjourn. Question-put and negatived. And objection being made that the debate had terminated unexpectedly-Mr. Barton moved, That the Standing Orders be suspended in order to enable the discussion to be
continued on the motion moved by the honorable Member for Bland (Mr. Watson). Debate ensued. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative. Debate continued on the motion, That the House do now adjourn. Question-put and negatived.
3. MESSAGE FROM THE SENATE-POST AND TELEGRAPH BILL.-Mr. Speaker announced the receipt of the following Message from the Senate:-MR. SPEAKER, Message No. 11.
The Senate has passed a Bill intituled "An Act relating to the Postal and Telegraphic Services of the Commonwealth," to which it desires the concurrence of the House of Repre-sentatives. R. C. BAKER,
President. The Senate, Melbourne, 24th July, 1901.
4. POST AND TELEGRAPH BILL.-Mr. Barton moved, That the Bill transmitted by the foregoing Message, intituled "A Bill for an Act relating to the Postal and Telegraphic Services of the Commonwealth," be now read a first time. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative.-Bill read a first time. Ordered-That the second reading be made an Order of the Day fo, Tuesday next.

5. CUSTOMS BILL.-The Order of the Day for the consideration in Committee of the whole House of His Excellency the Governor-General's Message No. 12, having been read-Mr. Speaker left the Chair, and the House resolved itself into a Committee of the Whole. Mr. Speaker resumed the Chair; Mr. Chanter reported that the Committee had come to a certain
resolution. Ordered-That the consideration of the Report be made an Order of the Day for to-morrow. 6. STATE LAWS AND RECORDS RECOGNITION BILL.-The Order of the Day for the consideration of the Report from the Committee of the whole House on this Bill having been read-Mr. Barton
moved, That the Report be now adopted. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative. Ordered-That the third reading be made an Order of the Day for to-morrow. 7. CUSTOMS BILL.-The Order of the Day for the consideration of the Report from the Committee of the
whole House on this Bill having been read-Mr. Kingston moved, That this Bill be now recommitted to a Committee of the whole House for the reconsideration of clauses 4, 63, 74, 119, 120, 165, Schedule II., and the consideration of
new clause 123A. And, after debate-Ordered-That this Bill be now recommitted to a Committee of the whole House for the recon-
sideration of clauses 4, 63, 66, 70, 74, 93, 119, 120, 133, 134, 137, 145, 147, 159A, 165, 213A, 2 13AA, 213B, 230, 231A, 239, 249, 255, Schedule II., and the consideration of new clause 123A. Mr. Speaker left the Chair, and the House resolved itself into a Committee of the Whole. Mr. Speaker resumed the Chair; Mr. Chanter reported that the Committee had made progress in the Bill, and that he was directed to ask, That the Committee may have leave to sit again. Resolved-That the House will, to-morrow, again resolve itself into the said Committee.8. POSTPONEMENT OF ORDERS OF THE DAY.-Ordered-That the consideration of Order of the Day No. 4 be postponed until Tuesday next, and that the consideration of Orders of the Day Nos. 5 to 15 inclusive, be postponed until after the consideration of Order of the Day No. 16.9. INTER-STATE COMMISSION BILL.-The Order of the Day for the resumption of the debate on the question, That this Bill be now read a second time, having been read- Debate resumed. Sir John Quick moved, That the debate be now adjourned. Question-That the debate be now adjourned-put and resolved in the affirmative. Ordered-That the resumption of the debate be made an Order of the Day for Tuesday next.10. DEFENCE BILL.-The Order of the Day for the resumption of the debate on the question, That this Bill be now read a second time, having been read- Debate resumed.Mr. Winter Cooke moved, That the debate be now adjourned.
