HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
FRIDAY, 5TH JULY, 1901.
1. The House met pursuant to adjournment.-Mr. Speaker took the Chair, and read Prayers.
2. PETITION.-Mr. Mahon presented a Petition from William Eddrup Adcock, of Derby and Fremantle, in the State of Western Australia, praying that the House would take such action as will lead to a review of the polling at the Fremantle election for the State of Western Australia, and test the legality of such election, and would take measures to secure the purity of elections and prevent corruption. Mr. Barton moved, That the Petition be referred at once to the Committee of Elections and
Qualifications for inquiry and report. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative.
3. CONTROL BY COMMONWEALTH OF NORTHERN TERRITORY OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA.-Mr. V. L. Solomon moved, pursuant to notice, That, in the opinion of this House, it is advisable that the complete control and jurisdiction over the Northern Territory of South Australia be acquired by the Commonwealth, and that the Federal Government should at once enter into negotiations for that purpose with the Government of the State of South Australia. Mr. Ewing moved, That the question be amended by the omission of all the words after the word
"is, " in the second line, with a view to the insertion instead thereof of the words "desirable that the Government should, as speedily as possible, inquire into the advisability of taking over the Northern Territory of South Australia." Mr. Poynton moved, That the debate be now adjourned. Question-That the debate be now adjourned-put and resolved in the affirmative. Ordered-That the debate be adjourned until Friday, 9th August next.
4. MEMBERS PRESENT.-All Members present except-The Honorable Sir Philip Fysh, K.C.M.G., Sir Edward Braddon, and Messrs. Cameron, Conroy, Joseph Cook, G. B. Edwards, R. Edwards, Fowler, Glynn, W. H. Groom, Harper, Hughes, Kennedy, Knox, Macdonald-Paterson, McColl, McDonald, Paterson, Sawers, Bruce Smith, Sydney Smith, Spence, Thomson, Watkins, Wilks, and Willis.
5. ADJOURNMENT.-Mr. Barton moved, That the House do now adjourn. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative.
And then the House, at thirteen minutes past three o'clock p.m., adjourned until Tuesday next at half-past two o'clock p.m.
