HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
THURSDAY, 4TH JULY, 1901.
1. The House met pursuant to adjournment.-Mr. Speaker took the Chair, and read Prayers. 2. PETITION.-Sir Edward Braddon presented a Petition from certain citizens and ratepayers of the State of Tasmania, in the Commonwealth of Australia, praying that the House will reject clause 54 of the Post and Telegraph Bill.
Ordered to lie on the Table.
3. PAPER.-Mr. Barton presented-Statement showing Number of Words, and the Total Cost of the Australian Cabling Business for 1900.
Ordered to lie on the Table.
4. PUBLIC SERVICE BILL.-The following Order of the Day was read and discharged:-Public Service Bill-Consideration of Committee's Report. Sir William Lyne moved, That this Bill be now recommitted to a Committee of the whole House for the reconsideration of clauses 2, 5 (6), 6, 7, 8 (2), 9 (1), 10 (3), 13 (2), 19, 20 (1), 21, 28, 40, 44,
51, 52, 63, and 71, and the consideration of a new clause. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative. Mr. Speaker left the Chair, and the House resolved itself into a Committee of the Whole. M:r. Speaker resumed the Chair; Mr. Chanter reported that the Committee had gone through the
the Bill, and agreed to the same with further amendments. Ordered-That the Bill as further amended be printed, and taken into consideration on Tuesday next.
.5. STATE LAWS AND RECORDS RECOGNITION BILL.-The Order of the Day for the second reading of this Bill having been read-Mr. Deakin moved, That this Bill be now read a second time. Debate ensued. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative.-Bill read a second time. Mr. Speaker left the Chair, and the House resolved itself into a Committee of the Whole. Mr. Speaker resumed the Chair; Mr. Chanter reported that the Committee had made progress in
the Bill, and that he was directed to move, That the 'Committee may have leave to sit again. Resolved-That the House will, on Tuesday next, again resolve itself into the said Committee. 1. CusTOMis BILL.-The Order of the Day for the second reading of this Bill having been read-Mr. Kingston moved, That this Bill be now read a second time.
Mr. Reid moved, That the debate be now adjourned. Question-That the debate be now adjourned-put and resolved in the affirmative. Ordered-That the debate be adjourned until Tuesday next.

7. MESSAGE FROM His EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL.-The following Message from His Excellency the Governor-General was presented by Sir George Turner, and the same was read by Mr. Speaker :-HOPETOUN,
Governor-General. Message rNo. 9.
In accordance with the requirements of section fifty-six of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Australia, the Governor-General recommends that an appropriation be made out of the Consolidated Revenue Fund to the service of the year ending the thirtieth day of June, One thousand nine hundred and two.
Melbourne, 27th June, 1901.
Ordered to lie on the Table, and to be taken into consideration in Committee of Supply this day.
8. SUPPLY.-The House, according to Order, resolved itself into the Committee of Supply. Mr. Speaker resumed the Chair; Mr. Chanter reported that the Committee had made progress, and that he was directed to move, That the Committee may have leave to sit again. Resolved-That the House will, on Tuesday next, again resolve itself into the said Committee.
9. AUDIT BILL.-The Order of the Day for the further consideration of this Bill in Committee of the whole House having been read-Mr. Speaker left the Chair, and the House resolved itself into a Committee of the Whole. Mr. Speaker resumed the Chair; Mr. Chanter reported that the Committee had made progress in
the Bill, and that he was directed to move, That the Committee may have leave to sit again. Resolved-That the House will, on Tuesday next, again resolve itself into the said Committee. 10. MEMBERS PRESENT.-All Members present except-The Honorable Sir Philip Fysh, K.C.M.G., and Messrs. Brown, Cameron, Conroy, Joseph Cook, G. B. Edwards, R. Edwards, Fowler, Fuller,
Glynn, W. H. Groom, Harper, Hughes, Kennedy, Knox, Macdonald-Paterson, McDonald, Paterson, Sawers, Sydney Smith, Spence, Thomas, Thomson, Watkins, Wilks, and Willis.
11. ADJOURNMENT.-Mr. Deakin moved, That the House do now adjourn. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative.
And then the House, at seventeen minutes past ten o'clock p.m., adjourned until to-morrow at two o'clock p.m.
