VOTES AND PROCEEDINGS
OF THE
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
TUESDAY, 11TH JUNE, 1901.
1. The House met pursuant to adjournment.-Mr. Speaker took the Chair.
2. MESSAGE FROM His EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL.-The following Message from His Excellency the Governor-General was presented by Sir George Turner, and the same was read by Mr. Speaker :-HOPETOUN,
Governor-General. Message No. 6.
In accordance with the requirements of section fifty-six of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Australia, the Governor-General recommends to the House of Representatives that an appropriation of revenue be made for the purposes of a Bill for the Collection and Payment of the Public Moneys, the Audit of the Public Accounts, and the protection and recovery of the Public Property, and for other purposes.
Sydney, 27th May, 1901.
Ordered to lie on the Table, to be printed, and taken into consideration in Committee of the whole House to-morrow.
3. PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS BILL.-The Order of the Day for the consideration in Committee of the whole House of His Excellency the Governor-General's Message No. 4, having been read-Mr. Speaker left the Chair, and the House resolved itself into a Committee of the Whole. Mr. Speaker resumed the Chair; Mr. Chanter reported that the Committee had come to a certain
resolution, which was read, and is as follows:-Resolved-That it is expedient that an appropriation be made from the Consolidated Revenue Fund for the purposes of a Bill to regulate Parliamentary Elections. And the said resolution was adopted by the House.
4. INTER-STATE COMMISSION BILL.-The Order of the Day for the consideration in Committee of the whole House of His Excellency the Governor-General's Message No. 5, having been read-Mr. Speaker left the Chair, and the House resolved itself into a Committee of the Whole. Mr. Speaker resumed the Chair; Mr. Chanter reported that the Committee had come to a certain
resolution, which was read, and is as follows :-Resolved--That it is expedient that an appropriation be made from the Consolidated Revenue Fund for the purposes of a Bill to constitute the Inter-State Commission, to invest it with certain powers of adjudication and administration, and to regulate trade and commerce with
other countries and among the States. And the said resolution was adopted by the House.

5. ACTS INTERPRETATION BILL.-The Order of the Day for the further consideration of this Bill in Committee of the whole House having been read-Mr. Speaker left the Chair, and the House resolved itself into a Committee of the Whole. Mr. Speaker resumed the Chair; Mr. Chanter reported that the Committee had gone through the
Bill and agreed to the same with amendments. Mr. Deakin moved, That this Bill be now recommitted to a Committee of the whole House for reconsideration. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative. Mr. Speaker left the Chair, and the House resolved itself into a Committee of the Whole. Mr. Speaker resumed the Chair; Mr. Chanter reported that the Committee had reconsidered the
Bill and agreed to the same with further amendments. Ordered-That the Report be taken into consideration to-morrow. 6. MESSAGE FROM His EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL.-The following Message from His Excellency the Governor-General was presented by Sir George Turner, and the same was read
by Mr. Speaker:-

Commonwealth of Australia. ESTIMATES OF EXPENDITURE, 1901.
HOPETOUN, Governor-General. Message No. 7.
The Governor-General transmits to the House of Representatives Estimates of Expenditure for the period ending 30th June, 1901, and recommends an appropriation of the Consolidated Revenue Fund accordingly.
Government Offices, June, 1901.
Ordered to lie on the Table, and, together with the accompanying Estimates, to be printed, and referred to the Committee of Supply.
7. SUPPLY.-The Order of the Day for going into the Committee of Supply having been read-Sir George Turner moved, That Mr. Speaker do now leave the Chair. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative. Whereupon Mr. Speaker left the Chair, and the House resolved itself into the Committee of Supply. Mr. Speaker resumed the Chair; Mr. Chanter reported that the Committee had made progress, and
that he was directed to move, That the Committee may have leave to sit again. Resolved-That the House will, to-morrow, again resolve itself into the said Committee. 8. MEMBERS PRESENT.-All Members present except-Messrs. Brown, Chapman, Joseph Cook, G. B. Edwards, Ewing, Fisher, Fuller, Hughes, Kennedy, F. E. McLean, Page, Reid, Bruce Smith,
E. Solomon, and Watkins.
9. ADJOURNMENT.-Mr. Barton moved, by leave, That the House, at its rising, adjourn until to-morrow at twenty minutes past two o'clock p.m. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative. Mr. Barton moved, That the House do now adjourn. Question-put and resolved in the affirmative. And then the House, at twenty-three minutes past eleven o'clock p.m., adjourned until to-morrow at
