    16   DISCUSSION OF MATTER OF PUBLIC IMPORTANCE— Education

The House was informed that Mr Oakeshott, Mr Hockey and Mrs D’Ath had proposed that definite matters of public importance be submitted to the House for discussion today. In accordance with the provisions of standing order 46, the Speaker had given priority to the matter proposed by Mr Oakeshott, namely, “The importance of education for regional and disadvantaged communities and concern about cuts in education budgets”.

The proposed discussion having received the necessary support—

Mr Oakeshott addressed the House.

Discussion ensued.

The time allotted under standing order 1 having expired, the discussion was interrupted.
