The Clerk informed the House that on 31 March 1983, His Excellency the Governor- General had received a letter from the Right Honourable John Malcolm Fraser, C.H ., resigning his seat as Member for the Electoral Division of Wannon.

The Clerk also announced that he had received advice from the Official Secretary to His Excellency the Governor-General, that on 7 April 1983 His Excellency had issued a writ for the election of a Member to serve for the Electoral Division of Wannon, in the State of Victoria, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr Fraser. The dates in connection with the election were fixed as follows: Date of nomination Tuesday, 19 April 1983.

Date of polling Saturday, 7 May 1983.

Date of return of writ On or before Wednesday, 6 July 1983.
