633  Senator Johnston: To ask the Minister representing the Minister for Defence—Given that the replacement of the Collins Class submarines is scheduled to begin in 2024-25, what is the current schedule to retire each of the Collins Class submarines.

634  Senator Johnston: To ask the Minister representing the Minister for Defence—Why does it take 30 months for a full cycle docking of a Collins Class submarine, when this length of time is not comparable with docking cycles for other current classes of submarines operated by other countries.

635  Senator Johnston: To ask the Minister representing the Minister for Defence—

(1) What involvement has the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) had in developing the replacement submarine project.

(2) What specific tasks has DSTO undertaken at the direction of the SEA 1000 office.

636  Senator Johnston: To ask the Minister representing the Minister for Defence—

(1) How many staff from the Defence Science and Technology Office have been, or are currently, assigned to tasks associated with the design of the Collins Class replacement submarine.

(2) What tasks did each of these officers undertake and for what period.

637  Senator Johnston: To ask the Minister representing the Minister for Defence—How many staff were employed in the SEA 1000 Project office for the 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 financial years.

638  Senator Johnston: To ask the Minister representing the Minister for Defence—What are the staffing projections for the SEA 1000 Project office for the 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 financial years.

639  Senator Johnston: To ask the Minister representing the Minister for Defence—What funding was allocated to the SEA 1000 Project office in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

640  Senator Johnston: To ask the Minister representing the Minister for Defence—What is the projected spending in the SEA 1000 Project office for the period of 2011 to 2015.

641  Senator Johnston: To ask the Minister representing the Minister for Defence—With reference to the Defence White Paper 2009 which states that the Collins Class replacement submarines will be assembled in South Australia:

(1) Is this still the case.

(2) Why not describe the submarines as being ‘built’ in South Australia.

642  Senator Johnston: To ask the Minister representing the Minister for Defence—Given that it was stated at the Submarine Institute of Australia Conference in 2010 that the design experience of the United Kingdom, with regard to their future submarines, was greatly enhanced by having significant input from groups who would potentially be involved in the servicing of the submarines: what involvement have such groups had in the SEA 1000 project to date, and/or in the future.

 

 643  Senator Johnston: To ask the Minister representing the Minister for Defence—

(1) What is the current build schedule to ensure that the first of the Collins Class replacement submarines is fully operational by 2025.

(2) What is the current delivery schedule for the remaining 11 submarines as defined in the Defence White Paper 2009.

644  Senator Johnston: To ask the Minister representing the Minister for Defence—

(1) Has the Scorpene Class submarine been considered as a military off-the-shelf [MOTS] replacement for the Collins Class submarine.

(2) What would be the estimated cost of purchasing 12 of this class of submarine as the ‘new’ submarine.

(3) What are the advantages and disadvantages of purchasing this class of submarine.

645  Senator Johnston: To ask the Minister representing the Minister for Defence—

(1) Has the HDW 209 Class (or an export variant) submarine been considered as a military off-the-shelf [MOTS] replacement for the Collins Class submarine.

(2) What would be the estimated cost of purchasing 12 of this class of submarine as the ‘new’ submarine.

(3) What are the advantages and disadvantages of purchasing this class of submarine.

646  Senator Johnston: To ask the Minister representing the Minister for Defence—

(1) Has the Spanish S-80 Class (or an export variant) submarine been considered as a military off-the-shelf [MOTS] replacement for the Collins Class submarine.

(2) What would be the estimated cost of purchasing 12 of this class of submarine as the ‘new’ submarine.

(3) What are the advantages and disadvantages of purchasing this class of submarine.

647  Senator Johnston: To ask the Minister representing the Minister for Defence—

(1) Has the Japanese ‘Soryu’ Class (or an export variant) submarine been considered as a military off-the-shelf [MOTS] replacement for the Collins Class submarine.

(2) What would be the estimated cost of purchasing 12 of this class of submarine as the ‘new’ submarine.

(3) What are the advantages and disadvantages of purchasing this class of submarine.
