2515  Senator Kirk: To ask the Minister representing the Minister for Foreign Affairs—With reference to the case of Australian minor Phan Ngoc Viet Phi, detained by Vietnamese authorities on 5 November 2002 and later gaoled in Vietnam:

(1) Can details be provided of any Australian assistance given to Phan Ngoc Viet Phi.

(2) Was any assistance provided beyond ‘standard consular assistance’; if so, can details be provided of this assistance.

(3) Were any representations made on her behalf by the Australian Government; if so, can details be provided of these representations.

(4) Can details be provided of the sentence.

(5) Were any appeals lodged against the sentence; if so, can details be provided of those appeals.

(6) Can details be provided of any assistance given by Australian officials in the preparation and lodgement of any appeals.

(7) What were the outcomes of any appeals.

(8) Can details be provided of any ongoing Australian assistance, consular or otherwise.

2516  Senator Allison: To ask the Minister for Defence—

(1) Will the Government guarantee that United States (US) military hardware containing depleted uranium (DU) will not be stored in Australia.

(2) Given that the US military commonly use depleted uranium in both ammunitions and shielding, would not a US military base in Australia create a radiation hazard and a potential military target, as well as contradicting the Australian policy of not using DU weaponry and hardware.

2517  Senator Nettle: To ask the Minister for Defence—Are the Australian Defence Forces in possession of any vehicles, including decommissioned vehicles, made with or contaminated by depleted uranium; if so: (a) are any of these vehicles located in defence training areas for target practice; (b) where are the defence training areas located; and (c) is the Bindoon live firing range in Western Australia one of those sites.

2518  Senator Nettle: To ask the Minister representing the Minister for the Environment and Heritage—With reference to page 196 of the department’s 2002-03 annual report which states that only one permit was issued under section 201 of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 , did the Minister issue any other permits during the 2002-03 reporting period; if so: (a) which threatened species were affected; and (b) which Commonwealth areas were involved.
