Notice given 10 November 1998

Senator Ray: To ask the Ministers listed below (Question Nos 126-151)—

(1) (a) Which members of the Minister’s staff purchased Telstra Corporation shares at the time of the float or at any time since; and (b) which staff members currently hold Telstra Corporation shares either in their own name or jointly, for example, with a spouse or through a trust or nominee company in which they have a controlling interest.

(2) What action was taken to draw the attention of staff to the requirements of the Prime Minister’s directive in relation to the ownership of Telstra shares by staff issued in August 1997.

(3) (a) Which of these staff, employed when the directive was issued, have subsequently declared the ownership of Telstra shares in their statements of pecuniary interest; and (b) what action, if any, has been taken in relation to such a declaration.

(4) In relation to staff employed since the issuing of the Prime Minister’s directive, have any declared in their statement of pecuniary interest the ownership of Telstra shares; if so, which staff and what action has been taken in relation to such a declaration.

153  Senator Ray: To ask the Minister representing the Prime Minister—With reference to the directive issued to Coalition ministers in August 1997 pertaining to the ownership of Telstra shares:

(1) To whom, specifically, was the directive dispatched.

(2) What restrictions were placed on staff members in relation to the purchase of Telstra shares.

(3) On which ministers and their staff was a total ban, as opposed to a 90-day ban, imposed.

(4) Did the directive specify to which staff precisely the ban extended.

(5) What instructions were provided to ministers on the manner in which their staff were to be informed of the provisions of the directive.

(6) What action subsequent to the issuing of the directive has been taken to ensure that its provisions have been fully complied with.
