27    Discussion of matter of public importance —Economics —Debt ceiling

The President informed the Senate that, at 8.30 am today, 4 senators had each submitted a letter in accordance with standing order 75. The proposal to be submitted to the Senate was determined by lot.

As a result, the President informed the Senate that the Leader of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation (Senator Hanson) had proposed that the following matter of public importance be submitted to the Senate for discussion:

The need to introduce a debt ceiling on how much the Australian Government could borrow.

The proposal was supported by four senators and the matter was discussed.
