16    Death of former Governor-General the Right Honourable Sir Ninian Martin Stephen, KG, AK, GCMG, GCVO, KBE, QC

The President informed the Senate of the death, on 29 October 2017, of the Right Honourable Sir Ninian Martin Stephen, KG, AK, GCMG, GCVO, KBE, QC, Governor-General from 1982 to 1989.

The Leader of the Government in the Senate (Senator Brandis), by leave, moved—That the Senate expresses its deep regret at the death, on 29 October 2017, of the Right Honourable Sir Ninian Martin Stephen, KG, AK, GCMG, GCVO, KBE, QC, former Governor-General of Australia and Justice of the High Court of Australia, places on record its appreciation of his long and distinguished public service, and tenders its profound sympathy to his family in their bereavement.
