4       Election of President

The Leader of the Government in the Senate (Senator Brandis), addressing the Clerk, reminded the Senate that the time had come for the Senate to choose one of its members to be President.

Senator Brandis proposed Senator the Honourable Scott Ryan to the Senate for its President and moved—That Senator Ryan take the chair of the Senate as President.

The Leader of the Australian Greens (Senator Di Natale) proposed Senator Whish-Wilson to the Senate for its President and moved—That Senator Whish-Wilson take the chair of the Senate as President.

Senators Ryan, Whish-Wilson and Di Natale addressed the Senate.

The Senate proceeded to a ballot.

The Clerk reported the result as follows:

Senator Ryan: 53 votes

Senator Whish-Wilson: 11 votes

and declared Senator Ryan elected as President.

The President thanked the Senate for the honour conferred upon him and took the chair. He was congratulated by Senator Brandis, the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate (Senator Wong), Senator Di Natale, the Leader of The Nationals in the Senate (Senator Scullion), Senator Bernardi and the Leader of Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party (Senator Hinch).

Senator Brandis informed the Senate that His Excellency the Governor-General would receive the President and senators in the President’s suite immediately.

Suspension of sitting : At 10.56 am the sitting of the Senate was suspended till the ringing of the bells.

 

 

 

At 11.35 am : The sitting of the Senate resumed.
