QUESTIONS

Suspension of standing orders: The Leader of the Opposition in the

Senate (Senator Hill), pursuant to contingent notice, moved--That so

much of the standing orders be suspended as would prevent Senator Hill

moving a motion to provide for the consideration of a matter, namely, a

motion to provide for a time limit on questions and answers during

question time this week.

Question put and passed.

Senator Hill moved--That a motion to provide for a time limit on

questions and answers during question time this week may be moved

immediatelyand have precedence over all other business until determined.

Senator Hill moved--That, during question time this week:

(a) the asking of each question not exceed 1 minute and the

answering of each question not exceed 2 minutes;

(b) the asking of each supplementary question not exceed 1 minute

and the answering of each supplementary question not exceed 2

minutes; and

(c) the time taken to determine the suspension of standing orders

and this motion not be regarded as part of the time for

questions today.

The Leader of the Australian Democrats (Senator Coulter) moved the

following amendment:

At end of motion add: "; (d) the time taken to make and determine

points of order not be regarded as part of the time for questions and

answers".

Debate ensued.

Question--That Senator Coulter's amendment be agreed to--put and passed.
