ELECTION OF PRESIDENT

The Leader of the Government (Senator Button), addressing the Clerk of the Senate by name, reminded the Senate that the time had now come when it was necessary for the Senate to choose one of its Members to be President-

Whereupon Senator Button proposed Senator Sibraa to the Senate for its President and moved-That Senator Sibraa do take the Chair of the Senate as President.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Senate (Senator Chaney) proposed Senator Jessop to the Senate for its President and moved-That Senator Jessop do take the Chair of the Senate as President.

Senator Sanders proposed Senator Georges to the Senate for its President and moved-That Senator Georges do take the Chair of the Senate as President.

And Senators Sibraa, Jessop and Georges having addressed themselves to the Senate-

The Senate thereupon proceeded to ballot; and the ballot being concluded, the Clerk reported the result, as follows:

Senator Sibraa ... 34 votes

Senator Jessop ... 33 votes

Senator Georges ... 9 votes

No candidate having an absolute majority of the Votes of the Senators present, the name of Senator Georges, as the Candidate having the smallest number of Votes, was withdrawn.

The Senate thereupon proceeded to a second ballot; and the ballot being concluded, the Clerk reported the result, as follows:

Senator Sibraa ... 42 votes

Senator Jessop ... 34 votes

and declared Senator Sibraa elected as President.

The President returned his acknowledgements to the Senate for the honour conferred upon him and assumed the Chair. He was congratulated by Senators Button and Chaney, the Leader of the Australian Democrats (Senator Haines), the Leader of the National Party of Australia in the Senate (Senator Collard) and Senators Jessop, Georges, Hamer, Harradine and Vallentine.

Senator Button informed the Senate that His Excellency the Governor-General would receive the President, and such honourable Senators as desired to accompany him, in the Senate Opposition Party Room forthwith.

Suspension of Sitting: At 2.50 p.m., the sitting of the Senate was suspended till 3.20 p.m.

The Senate having resumed-

The President reported that, accompanied by Members of the Senate, he had presented himself to His Excellency the Governor-General, who had graciously congratulated him upon his election as President.
