APPROACH OF THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL

The approach of His Excellency the Governor-General, the Right Honourable Sir Ninian Stephen, A.K., G.C.M.G., G.C.V.O., K.B.E., was announced by the Usher of the Black Rod.

His Excellency, having been conducted to the Chair, informed Senators that he had received a letter from Senator the Honourable Douglas McClelland resigning his office as President of the Senate and his seat as a Senator for New South Wales, and that he had received, from the Governor of the State of New South Wales, a certificate of the choice of Suzanne Margaret West as a Senator to fill the vacancy so caused in the representation of that State.

The Certificate was tabled, and read by the Clerk as follows:

Your Excellency,

I have the honour to inform Your Excellency that, at a Joint Sitting of the two Houses of the Legislature of New South Wales held this day in accordance with the provisions of section 15 of the Commonwealth Constitution Act, Suzanne Margaret West was duly chosen as the person to hold the place in the Senate rendered vacant by the resignation of Senator the Honourable Douglas McClelland.
