ABC/SBS AMALGAMATION BILL 1986

Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the motion of the Minister for Community Services (Senator Grimes)-That this Bill be now read a second time.

Senator Lewis moved an amendment, viz: Leave out all words after ""That'', insert:

""(a) this Bill not be read a second time;

(b) a merger of the ABC and the SBS not proceed without explicit legislative authority; and

(c) the Standing Committee on Education and the Arts report on the Government's reasons for proposing to amalgamate the ABC and the SBS''.

Debate continued.

Leave Refused: Senator Vigor sought leave for the Order of the Day relating to the consideration of the Independent and Multicultural Broadcasting Corporation Bill 1986 and the Independent and Multicultural Broadcasting Corporation (Transitional Provisions and Consequential Amendments) Bill 1986 to be called on forthwith, for those Bills to be considered together with the ABC/SBS Amalgamation Bill 1986 at every stage, and for the Questions for the several stages of the passage of the Bills to be put separately in respect of each Bill.

Objection being raised, leave not granted.

Debate continued.

On the motion of Senator Grimes the debate was adjourned.

Ordered-That the resumption of the debate be an Order of the Day for a later hour of the day.
