EDUCATION AND THE ARTS-STANDING COMMITTEE-7TH REPORT ON THE EXAMINATION OF ANNUAL REPORTS

Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the motion of the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Education and the Arts (Senator Colston)-That the Senate take note of the Report.

On the motion of Senator Teague the following amendment was debated and agreed to, viz: At end of motion, add "", and-

(a) agrees with the Committee's conclusion that the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's (ABC) approach to the Committee's inquiry was incorrect and that the ABC and any summoned officers of the ABC should have answered the Committee's questions;

(b) asserts that the ABC and any other witnesses before Senate Committees have an obligation to co-operate and to answer questions within the terms of reference of Senate Standing Committees and Senate Estimates Committees alike; and

(c) requests the Senate Standing Committee on Education and the Arts to consider, in the light of its own evidence and the answers subsequently given by the ABC to Senate Estimates Committees, whether further investigation is required''.

Motion, as amended, agreed to.
