PETITIONS

The following 12 petitions, lodged with the Clerk by the Senators indicated, were received:

Senators Collard and Sheil, 2 petitions similar in wording, from 286 and 11 petitioners, respectively, praying that the Senate reject the Australian Bill of Rights Bill 1985.

Senators Michael Baume and Sibraa, from 51 and 461 petitioners, respectively, praying that the Senate request the Government to restore funding for ""English as a Second Language'' programs and multicultural education.

Senators Macklin and Powell, 2 petitions similar in wording, from 80 and 1093 petitioners, respectively, praying that the lease of the Pine Gap Defence Space Research Facility be terminated and that the future use of the facility be subject to public debate and ratification by the Parliament.

Senators Ryan and Sibraa, from 60 and 230 petitioners, respectively, praying that the Senate request the Government to retain the Anzac Rifle Range in Malabar, NSW.

Senator Macklin, from 24 petitioners praying that the Parliament recognise the widespread public opposition to plant variety rights and promote alternative means of royalty collection for plant breeders.

Senator Short, from 123 petitioners praying that the Senate request the Government to withdraw the fringe benefits tax legislation.

Senator Vigor, from 99 petitioners praying that the Senate request the Government to protect the right of employees to choose a superannuation scheme and to recognise only those schemes which provide genuine superannuation.

Senator Zakharov, from 90 petitioners praying that the Senate legislate to close the joint Australian-United States electronic communications facilities at the Watsonia Army Barracks, Victoria.

The following petition, not in conformity with the Standing Orders, was, by leave, presented by Senator Collard and received:
