HOUSING POLICY

Order of the Day read for the adjourned debate on the motion of Senator Archer-That the Senate condemns the Hawke Labor Government for-

(a) plunging the housing of Australian families into the worst position in 50 years by doctrinaire and unbalanced policies;

(b) creating and maintaining a high interest, high tax economy that makes home ownership an unattainable goal for many young Australian families;

(c) presiding over and causing a rapid decline in the availability of rental housing, causing extreme hardship to low income families in particular;

(d) creating uncertainty by not releasing after 6 months, details concerning taxation policy on investment property; and

(e) destabilising the finance market by artificial and sectoral constraints which will have long-term detrimental effects on home ownership funding.

Debate ensued.

Question-put and negatived.
